The World Ends with You Director Announces Departure From Square Enix

Tatsuya Kando, director of “The World Ends with You,” has officially parted ways with Square Enix. Throughout his 29-year tenure, he was instrumental in developing every installment within the series, including the latest release “NEO: The World Ends with You.” Additionally, he held the role of animation supervisor for “Kingdom Hearts 1-3,” among other key roles.

On Twitter, Kando announced that as of May 31st, he has parted ways with Square Enix. Over nearly three decades, he’s been involved in numerous projects such as Final Fantasy, Kingdom Hearts, and The World Ends with You, and the memories from these experiences are priceless.

As a game developer, seeing the enthusiasm from fellow gamers fueling my journey has been nothing short of inspiring. Each day, their support has propelled me further to refine and create, and for that, I am profoundly grateful. A heartfelt thank you for your unwavering encouragement!

Moving ahead, I’ll strive to keep producing delightful content that puts a smile on many faces. As for my future endeavors with Kando, we’ll have to wait and see, so keep an eye out for more developments.

In July 2021, “NEO: The World Ends with You” was released on both PS4 and Nintendo Switch platforms, with a PC version following in September 2021. Although it received positive reviews from critics, Square Enix announced that the action RPG didn’t sell as well as they had initially anticipated.

The franchise has been indefinitely halted without any signs of new installments. Our review gave it a 8 out of 10, highlighting its impressive writing, art direction, soundtrack, and combat system. Unfortunately, technical glitches on the Switch and uneven pacing in certain sections affected our overall experience.
