As we venture further into the 21st century, the creative minds behind television are tirelessly innovating and challenging norms, redefining our perception of “jaw-dropping” content. In just the last decade, we’ve been presented with series that portray graphic scenes such as characters having their eyes gouged or encountering babies cooked in a microwave (such as The Boys and Happy!). To be honest, it seems like there isn’t much left to surprise us, content that would have certainly been unthinkable 30 years ago. In fact, back in 1996, an episode of The X-Files was deemed so shocking and terrifying that it was taken off the air entirely.

Without a doubt, “The X-Files” was a groundbreaking TV series that wasn’t afraid to venture into uncharted territories during its prime time. From eerie extraterrestrial encounters to confounding mysteries that made you wonder if your mind was playing tricks on you, it’s no surprise that this sci-fi show has earned the title of a classic. If you asked 50 fans about their favorite episode, you might as well be asking for 50 unique answers. However, one episode stands out among others as the series’ most chilling: “Home,” which aired on October 11th, 1996 during Season 4. This gripping tale wasn’t rebroadcast until several years later.

You Don’t Have to Go Home, But You Can’t Stay Here

Titled “Home,” penned by Glen Morgan and James Wong, this episode operates independently within the series, unrelated to its intricate main narrative. The action unfolds in the quaint town of Home, Pennsylvania, where a woman delivers an abnormal newborn. However, it’s not the unusual birth that captures our attention initially; rather, it’s the ensuing scene where three deformed men bury the baby near a dilapidated house amidst a heavy downpour. This intriguing sequence sets the stage for the unfolding mystery. After the deformed baby’s body is unearthed by some children, FBI Special Agents Mulder (played by David Duchovny) and Scully (portrayed by Gillian Anderson) are summoned to probe into this bizarre incident.

During their probe, Mulder and Scully soon grasp that they won’t find a warm reception from everyone in Home. Delving further into the case, they unearth the startling fact about the deformed baby’s background. With no alternatives, these special agents are compelled to visit the Peacock residence, a family under suspicion for terrible inbreeding. However, upon entering the home, Mulder and Scully are taken aback by the horrors they encounter. From beheadings to disfigured amputees, the malevolence residing within the Peacock household is extreme, even for avid watchers of The X-Files. The episode was so intense that it earned the first “TV-MA” rating in the show’s history.

Earning Legend Status

During its fourth season, The X-Files was right at the heart of its most celebrated period, earning it recognition as one of the greatest sci-fi series ever made. The episode “Home” attracted an impressive 18.85 million viewers – quite a large audience to unsettle. After the episode’s broadcast, executives at Fox were taken aback by the disturbing themes presented in “Home.” In a conversation with The New York Times, Wong acknowledged that he and Morgan faced criticism from one producer in particular.

Wong recounts receiving a phone call from a producer who exclaimed, ‘You lot are incredible!’ At first, he was puzzled, thinking the producer must be referring to something else, as they had performed even more daring feats.

As a dedicated fan of The X-Files, I can’t help but feel that the episode “Home” resonated deeply with many viewers. Though it didn’t vanish entirely, it was consigned to spend years gathering dust in Fox’s archives. Due to its graphic and intense content, Fox executives opted not to include “Home” in the rotation of X-Files reruns. However, after a long hiatus of three years, “Home” was finally given permission to air during a special Halloween event in 1999. From my perspective, the fact that the episode was banned only served to enhance its mystique.
