There’s a Brutal Lack of Interest in Marathon from Hardcore PS5 Fans

The hasty move by Sony towards live services has sparked significant doubt among PlayStation loyalists, and it seems that the game “Marathon” may face challenges in gaining traction with dedicated PS5 gamers.

Last week, we conducted a survey on our site where readers of Push Square were asked to choose their most eagerly awaited PS5 games for the second half of 2025. The poll featured a total of 70 titles, and the gaming community enthusiastically participated, casting a staggering 6,000 votes! Bungie’s shooter was one of the games included in this poll.

In some games, such as Ghost of Yotei and Death Stranding 2, performed exceptionally well, garnering 961 and 504 votes respectively. However, upon closer examination of the complete results, it was Marathon that particularly stood out – and unfortunately, not in a positive manner.

The multiplayer game garnered only 18 votes amidst 6,047 total votes, ranking it 47th among the 70 titles.

As a gamer myself, let me point out that every player gets the chance to pick up to five favorite games in this poll. Yet, the fact that Marathon didn’t receive much attention, despite being endorsed by PlayStation and crafted by the legendary Bungie team, is truly staggering. It’s hard to comprehend such a low level of backing for a title with such pedigree.

Indeed, this situation seems to be an extension of the recent art theft scandal that deeply affected Bungie. Unfortunately for them, their new shooting game has been met with continuous challenges, suggesting that perhaps the unfavorable media coverage is causing some strain.

Last week, during a PlayStation business meeting, co-CEO Hermen Hulst expressed his enthusiasm about Marathon’s upcoming title. He described it as daring, innovative, and incredibly captivating. Notably, this will be the first Bungie title in more than ten years, which makes him particularly eager for its launch. (Source: Kotaku)

He explained that we’re reviewing the recent closed alpha test the team conducted, and the feedback received has been diverse yet incredibly valuable.

It appears that the executives at Sony are optimistic about Marathon’s prospects, but considering the current trends, it seems like the game faces a challenging climb to capture the attention of Sony’s most dedicated PlayStation players.

At this current point, what are your thoughts on the upcoming Marathon event? Let’s speculate about the future direction of Sony’s live service endeavors in the comment area beneath.
