There’s Never Been A Better Time To Not Be An Elder Scrolls Fan

It’s worth mentioning that Oblivion Remastered has been unexpectedly released this week, as opposed to being officially announced first. This surprise launch was unveiled during a special presentation by Bethesda, where they delved into the enhancements made to the original game. The good news is, you can start playing it immediately on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox, and if you’re subscribed to Game Pass, you can find it there too.

Oblivious To Oblivion

Despite the consistent flow of information suggesting its arrival, not everyone found it particularly intriguing. Frankly, I was among those who couldn’t care less. You see, neither Oblivion nor The Elder Scrolls series has ever captured my interest significantly.

As a young gamer, I clocked in hundreds of hours on Skyrim across multiple playthroughs, and let’s be honest, who didn’t? Back when I was just ten, Oblivion was fresh out, and gaming wasn’t exactly a part of my everyday life. In fact, I didn’t have many gamer pals or a community to share the experience with. Skyrim, though, was the game that introduced me to the Elder Scrolls universe for the very first time.

I’ve always perceived a significant void in my video game experience due to not having played Oblivion, a legendary title from its era, which is renowned for being one of the best games of its generation and an essential part of an equally iconic series. Regrettably, I never found the opportunity or desire to delve into this classic game that I should have experienced in my younger years – a fact that I deeply regret, as there were many such missed opportunities.

I was studying, okay? Not to fall back on lazy racial stereotypes, but I have Asian parents.

This Is My Elder Scrolls 6

Initially, what was perceived as a shortcoming has now become an edge. I’m part of a whole generation of gamers who’ve been engrossed in Skyrim and nothing else, and today, we’re the ones leading the pack. Those who’ve previously played Oblivion will be revisiting this game, making comparisons to their past experiences. Yes, they get to traverse a more stunning, captivating iteration of a game they’ve cherished, but fundamentally, it remains the same game at its heart.

As for myself, I’m entirely unfamiliar with Oblivion. Given that the storyline’s chronology doesn’t significantly affect the gaming experience, it feels like a fresh mainline game for me. Essentially, I’m enjoying a visually appealing and modernized Elder Scrolls title, experiencing it as if it were brand new. For those who have played Oblivion, the next Elder Scrolls game will offer something new, but that might be another five years away. In the meantime, I’m quite content with this new addition to the series.

Instead of frequently expressing my discontent with the abundance of game remasters over original content, it’s reasonable that a classic like Oblivion should receive one.

Currently, The Elder Scrolls series isn’t my cup of tea, as I didn’t have the chance to play these games during my childhood. However, with this remastered version, there’s a possibility that I might develop an interest in it. If by any chance a Morrowind remaster is unexpectedly released in a few years, I could join you in excitement, as the remaster has piqued my curiosity about this well-known franchise. There’s no guarantee, but perhaps this newfound interest will take hold. Regardless, I consider myself a winner for eventually exploring an older game at my own pace.
