Super Smash Bros. Ultimate” represents the fifth installment in an exceptionally popular multiplayer platform fighting series, where fans have collectively invested thousands of hours over the years. Although several characters have received essential updates, and the roster is larger than before, there are still some debatable decisions within the franchise. Numerous fighters possess abilities that seem illogical and don’t accurately represent their actual characters. Many of these characters require significant changes for the next “Super Smash Bros.” These alterations are long overdue, as Nintendo typically makes minor adjustments to characters’ moves, but in this case, complete reworks to their movesets and attributes might be necessary.
Hey there fellow gamers! As someone who’s spent countless hours in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, I’ve noticed a few characters that really need some love. We’ve collected data on those who are struggling and put together a list of characters in dire need of kit and move set reworks for the next installment of Super Smash Bros.
While many characters could use minor adjustments here and there, these guys have some seriously problematic aspects.
Sonic
In the game Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, although Sonic can be quite frustrating to encounter, his annoying nature isn’t the primary reason for a redesign. Instead, it’s due to the fact that numerous of his attacks transform him into a spinning blue ball. This includes his up-smash, neutral air, down throw, side special, and down special moves. Given the multiple games in Sonic’s franchise, there is immense potential for creative and distinct moves. Regrettably, Sonic’s move set currently lacks innovation and could greatly benefit from a few changes. This would not only enhance Sonic’s playability but also introduce much-needed diversity to his kit, making him more enjoyable to control and face in combat.
Ganondorf
In a refreshing take, it’s been long argued that Ganondorf, known for being a powerful warlock and king in the world of Zelda, has been unfairly saddled as a sluggish doppelganger of Captain Falcon. Although Nintendo recently equipped him with a sword, his moveset is inconsistent with his character. To better represent Ganondorf’s agility and power, he should be transformed into a swift and impactful fighter instead of the slow, heavy version we currently see. Incorporating some of his magical abilities into his move set would greatly enhance his likeness to the iconic villain in The Legend of Zelda series. There are numerous games within Nintendo’s library that could serve as inspiration for revamping Ganondorf, any of which would be an improvement over his current iteration. Essentially, anything new would surpass what Ganondorf is offering now, and could catapult him out of the lower tiers and back into prominence.
Young Link
Instead of Young Link just being a faster and projectile-enhanced version of Link, it could be beneficial to give him a unique gameplay style similar to Pokemon Trainer, where he can switch between different masks from “The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask”. Each mask could provide him with new abilities and stats, adding versatility to his kit and making him stand out more. For instance, a Goron, Zora, and Deku mask would offer diverse combat options, emulating the varied gameplay experience of Pokemon Trainer while also honoring one of the most acclaimed Zelda games.
Samus/Zero Suit Samus
In Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, both Samus and Zero Suit Samus are entertaining characters, but there’s a significant design flaw. The traditional Samus, being an armored warrior, is sluggish, whereas Zero Suit Samus moves swiftly. However, it should be the other way around – Samus’ power suit gives her speed and agility, making her faster than Zero Suit Samus. Aligning their abilities with their origins in Metroid would make narrative sense, but adjustments to their skill sets would also be necessary. If we swapped their current speed levels, it could result in an overpowered Samus, so Nintendo needs to rethink the character archetypes for both to better reflect their original games. Another major concern is Samus’ jab attack, which isn’t effective as it should be. It’s crucial that Nintendo addresses this issue in the next installment of the game.
Solid Snake
As a devoted fan, I’ve always admired Solid Snake for his stealthy gameplay in the Metal Gear series. However, it seems that his move set in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate doesn’t entirely capture his essence. The exclusion of a gun in Super Smash Bros. Brawl was understandable due to the developers’ concerns about real-looking weapons, but with Joker’s inclusion, it appears that those restrictions have been eased.
Snake’s stealthy nature in Metal Gear contrasts sharply with the abundance of explosive weapons in his Super Smash Bros. Ultimate arsenal. A switch to pistols could bring him closer to his core identity and potentially reduce some of the over-the-top, campy aspects.
Snake already possesses a boxing ability up close in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, but equipping him with a pistol and integrating it into his repertoire would make him feel even more authentic in close combat situations. This change could enhance both his character representation and gameplay experience.
Dr. Mario
It’s clear that Dr. Mario has been unfairly treated in the game, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. Essentially, he’s a less effective version of Mario and his presence seems unnecessary. His shortcomings are particularly evident in his recovery abilities, which are lackluster compared to Mario’s, and his overall kit, which is strikingly similar to Mario’s with little distinction. At present, Dr. Mario functions like a slower version of Mario with some minor variations in moves.
To give Dr. Mario more character and encourage players to select him more often, it would be beneficial to redesign his kit to reflect his puzzle game history and doctor status. Introducing tools commonly used by doctors into his kit could make him unique and distinct from Mario. Dr. Mario already possesses an electric effect that could be replaced with a defibrillator for added realism. This defibrillator could also serve as a self-healing tool, similar to the Wii Fit Trainer’s abilities.
Steve/Alex
Steve is a highly contentious figure in Smash lore, often compared to Brawl’s Meta Knight due to his impact on the gameplay dynamics. Steve’s characteristics, particularly his powerful frame data and attacks, border on being overpowered, potentially disrupting the usual gameplay strategies. A single combo from Steve can quickly push players to kill percent following a mere error, making him less than enjoyable to face off against. Balancing Steve by reducing his damage output and frame data would significantly improve fairness. The character remains a hot topic for potential bans, but fine-tuning his abilities would greatly enhance the quality of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate and future installments.
Kazuya
As a gamer, I find myself struggling against Kazuya. He’s like an unstoppable force, dealing way too much damage and having far too many lethal combos. A single interaction should never lead to a character’s demise. To be fair, mastering Kazuya requires a high level of skill, but pro players make it look effortless. In the upcoming Super Smash Bros., I believe either reducing his damage output or making it less challenging to evade his combos is crucial. It’s unfortunate that such a well-crafted character is currently overpowered. The detail and homage to Tekken in Kazuya’s moveset are truly impressive, but for the sake of fair gameplay, he needs a rebalance or adjustment of some sort, even if it means reducing his weight.
Kirby
Kirby is among the original characters in the first “Super Smash Bros.” game and his move set has seen minor adjustments over time. However, many of Kirby’s moves appear rather predictable, given the diverse abilities demonstrated across his various games. Enhancing his smash attacks with different power-ups from these games could significantly enhance Kirby’s toolkit, and pay tribute to the rich history of Kirby’s series. Kirby has typically been a lower-ranked character, but revising his move set would not only show appreciation for the games but may also elevate him on tier lists.
Lucario
In the game Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, Lucario is another character who fits well overall. His moves are reminiscent of his Pokemon abilities, but there’s one significant adjustment required. The Aura passive in its current state isn’t effective, particularly when compared to characters like Joker and Terry whose skills are superior. Essentially, Aura places Lucario at a disadvantage by encouraging him to be behind or losing, which is detrimental in a fighting game. While some might argue it serves as a comeback mechanism, Sephiroth demonstrates that there are better ways to implement this concept. Enhancing Lucario’s Aura would not only boost its usage but also encourage skillful play over stock loss.
In the world of gaming, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate boasts one of the most impressive rosters among series within the fighting game genre. However, certain characters appear to deviate from their authentic in-game stories. Making adjustments as suggested could significantly enhance these characters, making them more faithful to their original series and giving them a sense of familiarity. Characters like Sephiroth, Banjo & Kazooie, Zelda, Meta Knight, and the Fire Emblem characters especially, who need unique traits to set them apart, are worth reconsidering for updates.
