As a lifelong fan of Spider-Man and someone who has spent countless hours poring over every comic book, movie, and TV show featuring the wall-crawler, I firmly believe that the MCU has an incredible opportunity to elevate the character’s rogues gallery to new heights. Each of these villains offers a unique and intriguing take on what makes Spider-Man tick, from the brooding intensity of Tombstone to the tragic backstory of Kaine.
Of all the villains listed, I am particularly excited about the potential for Hobgoblin to finally live up to his full potential in the MCU. The original storyline introducing the character was a masterclass in pacing and tension, and the mystery of who Hobgoblin really is still lingers in the memories of fans like me. If done correctly, Ned Leeds becoming Hobgoblin could provide a powerful emotional punch that would resonate with audiences and add depth to Spider-Man’s ongoing story.
And let’s not forget the humor – after all, we’re talking about Spider-Man here! The wall-crawler has always had a knack for finding the silver lining in even the darkest of situations, and I can only imagine the hilarious hijinks that would ensue as he tries to take down these formidable foes. So let’s get to work, MCU writers – it’s time to give Spider-Man the rogues gallery he deserves!
(Bonus joke: Can you believe they almost included a Hobgoblin tease in No Way Home but didn’t? Talk about a missed opportunity! I guess that just means we’ll have to wait for Spider-Verse 2 to see the wall-crawler go up against all his greatest foes. Or maybe we’ll just have to settle for watching reruns of the old animated series and pretend it’s still 1994.)
The enduring popularity of Spider-Man throughout the years can be attributed to various elements, one of which is his impressive roster of adversaries. Spider-Man boasts a diverse collection of villains designed specifically to challenge him in unique and engaging ways. Unfortunately, Sony has struggled to make good use of these characters, with Kraven the Hunter being the latest misstep. However, this doesn’t mean that Marvel Studios should overlook Spider-Man’s extensive roster of enemies.
For their next Spider-Man venture in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), they have an abundance of top-tier choices. While many of Spider-Man’s main antagonists have already been featured, there are numerous other impressive villains that the MCU could effectively utilize. Spider-Man’s adversaries span a wide range, with several supporting villains consistently waiting to take center stage.
Hydro-Man
During an accident while testing a novel generator, Morris Bench fell overboard. Exposed to the energy conversion process and combined with volcanic gases, his molecular makeup underwent a transformation. This new ability allowed him to change into water, prompting a desire for vengeance against Spider-Man. To finance his ongoing conflict, he resorted to criminal activities, frequently engaging in battles with Spider-Man whenever the opportunity presented itself.
Hydro-Man stands out as an engaging villain due to his longstanding grudge against Spider-Man. Despite not initially appearing to be a prime antagonist, this personal feud aligns thematically with Spider-Man’s youth and inexperience. It also adds a layer of realism, suggesting that Spider-Man’s greenhorn status might have unintentionally led to Hydro-Man’s misfortune.
Villains driven by justifiable motives tend to create the most captivating adversaries on screen, as they introduce depth and complexity to the narrative. In this case, Hydro-Man would serve the purpose of presenting a unique take on the Spider-Man saga for Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) viewers.
White Rabbit
The character known as White Rabbit is a lesser-known antagonist who is often ridiculed rather than feared. Yet, she possesses the potential to be an outstanding adversary for Spiderman on the big screen. Originally, Lorina Dodson was a wealthy woman who later settled for being a trophy wife. Bored with her privileged lifestyle, she murdered her aged husband and used the inheritance to buy advanced weaponry and devices. Adopting the persona of White Rabbit, inspired by Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland, she began a criminal career filled with humorous encounters with Spiderman.
The White Rabbit may not boast the prestigious background shared by some Spider-Man antagonists, as her encounters with Spiderman are often more awkward for her than perilous for him. Nevertheless, she deserves a shot at cinematic fame. White Rabbit is an essential aspect of Spider-Man’s rogues gallery, serving as the comedy villain. She could be an excellent choice for a secondary antagonist in a Spiderman film. Imagine a scenario where, amid battling major villains, Spiderman has to constantly handle the amusing but low-risk threats of White Rabbit. Alternatively, the movie could develop her into a formidable adversary by the end. The potential of White Rabbit as a character is too compelling to ignore.
Kaine
For years, The Clone Saga has been criticized, and rightfully so. Marvel prolonged the narrative excessively without a clear ending in mind, merely capitalizing on sales while hoping for the best. However, this doesn’t mean it deserves to be forgotten – there are some thoughtful concepts and captivating characters within it. With the right approach, The Clone Saga could find new life in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, particularly with characters like Kaine. Kaine served as a harbinger of destruction, constantly monitoring Spider-Man and the Scarlet Spider, employing his “Mark of Kaine” power to eliminate anyone who posed a threat to him.
In a unique twist, Kaine emerged as the initial clone of Spider-Man. Compared to regular Peter, he exhibited extraordinary strength and speed. His spider-sense was exceptionally potent, transforming into prophetic visions rather than just a sixth sense. Moreover, his Mark of Kaine served to enhance his adhesive wall-crawling abilities. He’s an imposing figure who can hold his own against Spider-Man, pushing him to his limits in ways that few antagonists in the Marvel Cinematic Universe have. Kaine was undeniably a standout during the Clone Saga, earning him a brief stint as the Scarlet Spider. Given his popularity and the intrigue he brings, he would be an excellent choice for introducing the Clone Saga in a series of films.
Tombstone
After establishing his dominance, it’s high time for Tombstone to shine. Previously, he was the formidable antagonist in the latest arc of “The Amazing Spider-Man,” providing fans with a true depiction of him as the menacing and powerful mob boss. Much like his rise through Spider-Man’s rogues gallery, Tombstone climbed the underworld ladder, eventually matching wits with Kingpin. With his visually striking presence and the kind of danger he poses, Tombstone offers the MCU Spider-Man a worthy adversary.
In simpler terms, introducing Tombstone as a powerful mob kingpin expands the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s opportunities for crime-focused Spider-Man tales. These stories would provide a stark contrast to his previous adventures, making Spider-Man’s journey more grounded and relatable. Facing off against a shrewd criminal mastermind is a classic Spider-Man plot element, and since Daredevil has Kingpin, Tombstone serves as an ideal adversary to test Spider-Man’s mettle.
Hobgoblin
One of Spider-Man’s most significant missed potentials lies in the character known as Hobgoblin. Fans eagerly anticipated the story that introduced this villain, relishing in the suspense of figuring out who was behind the mask. The identity being a mystery added to the excitement. However, it was later revealed to be Spider-Man’s friend Ned Leeds, but Marvel later changed this, revealing Roderick Kingsley as the true Hobgoblin. This retcon diminished the impact of the original storyline. Since then, there have been multiple characters who have taken on the Hobgoblin mantle, yet none have managed to recapture the excellence of the initial Hobgoblin saga.
The Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) has all the necessary elements to introduce Hobgoblin, with Ned Leeds being Peter Parker’s counterpart in the MCU. Fans have long suspected that Ned might take on this role. Almost hinted in “No Way Home”, a Hobgoblin tease could be seen. Such a storyline would offer captivating narratives and provides an intriguing twist: if Ned becomes Hobgoblin, it’s due to his absence from Peter’s life. This twist gives Spider-Man a sense of responsibility, making for compelling stories that delve into his sense of duty. As a villain, Ned as Hobgoblin could perfectly suit the second Spider-Man trilogy.
