These STALKER 2 screenshots are so drop-dead gorgeous they’ve got me begging the devs for a Photo Mode, but you can use this mod in the meantime

  • STALKER 2, built on UE5, is one of the best-looking games ever
  • Players have taken phenomenal STALKER 2 screenshots with this mod
  • STALKER 2 doesn’t have a Photo Mode, but hopefully GSC adds one

As a seasoned gamer with a penchant for capturing the breathtaking landscapes of video games, I can wholeheartedly say that STALKER 2 has left me spellbound by its stunning visuals. The game’s use of Unreal Engine 5 and photogrammetry techniques have resulted in a world that is not only eerie and tense but also incredibly beautiful.

Upon embarking on my initial exploration of STALKER 2 – the highly anticipated open-world survival shooter exclusively available on Xbox and Windows PC from GSC Game World – last month, I was immediately struck by its striking visuals. Constructed using Unreal Engine 5 with an abundance of advanced photogrammetry, texture work, and incredibly lifelike lighting effects, it’s truly a graphical masterpiece that leaves me awestruck. Despite the Zone’s ominous and tense atmosphere, it also showcases breathtaking beauty.

I was quite disheartened when I searched for a Photo Mode in the menus and didn’t find one. In fact, using such tools to take stylish screenshots is now one of my preferred methods for expressing and appreciating a game’s ambiance. Given that STALKER 2 is widely regarded as one of the most atmospheric first-person shooter games ever created, this absence seems particularly noticeable. While you can disable the HUD to capture stunning screenshots, it doesn’t offer the same level of control and customization as dedicated modes designed for capturing shots from unusual angles or focusing on intricate details.

Although STALKER 2 doesn’t have an official Photo Mode yet, I’ve found a great unofficial mod solution that you can use immediately if, like me, you enjoy capturing GSC’s intricately designed world for extended periods. I discovered it by looking at some stunning screenshots shared on social media by players @Steven_VP1 and @Spectral_Lens, many of which are displayed below for your viewing pleasure.

These images were captured using the Universal Unreal Engine 5 Unlocker (UUU) tool by Otis_Inf. You can obtain this tool by joining their Patreon community. Designed by Otis_Inf to emulate Photo Mode capabilities in Unreal games lacking them, the UUU software is remarkably robust. It offers comprehensive control over the in-game camera and allows you to manipulate the player’s model, adjusting its position, rotation, and even switching to a third-person view. Additionally, it enables scene lighting modifications, post-processing effects experimentation, and more.

As a fan, I find UUU remarkably sophisticated and expansive compared to numerous Photo Mode options developed by others. Its unique features such as customizable dolly cam paths and the ability to adjust NPC/character animation speeds make it an ideal tool for creating captivating machinimas. For a comprehensive understanding of its capabilities and installation instructions, be sure to check out its page on Otis_Inf’s website.

The method entails integrating a .DLL file into STALKER 2, which enables the software to operate on top of the game, providing you with a way to utilize all its functions. If you’ve ever customized your games using post-processing tools such as ReShade or ENBs that are commonly used for Bethesda titles, the concept is somewhat comparable. However, UUU’s primary function is to take screenshots rather than adjusting the game’s visuals directly.

Of course, the hope is that GSC Game World eventually adds a native Photo Mode to STALKER 2, as while UUU is awesome, it’s something you can only use if you’re playing the game on PC. Still, this is a pretty amazing tool to pick up if you’re a fan of the game and enjoy virtual photography. It’s definitely getting a download from me.

So far, STALKER 2 has been a significant triumph for GSC. Although it initially faced some performance problems at launch which resulted in a mixed Metacritic score, it has also garnered high acclaim for its ominous atmosphere and tense survival shooter gameplay. Most of the stability issues have been promptly addressed in subsequent updates. The game sold 1 million copies across Xbox and PC within just two days, and on Steam, it currently holds a “Very Positive” rating with 84% of its 67,110 reviews being positive; in my own review, I awarded it 4 out of 5 stars, stating that it “toweringly impresses as one of the most captivating open-world shooters I’ve ever experienced, offering a palpable atmosphere and deeply satisfying exploration that kept me riveted to my chair, along with addictively intense and dynamic action that had me on the edge of my seat.

The highly anticipated game, STALKER 2: Heart of Chornobyl, is now available on both Xbox Series X|S and Windows PC. This year, it’s been consistently ranked among the top Xbox games and top PC games. Priced at $59.99, it’s a worthy addition to any gaming collection. Interestingly, you can currently find a discount on it at CDKeys. Additionally, you can play it through Xbox Game Pass, PC Game Pass, or Xbox Game Pass Ultimate.
