'They don't care about Enotria and they don't care about you,' Jyamma Games CEO blasts Xbox amidst indefinite delay

What you need to know

  • Enotria: The Last Song is an upcoming PC and PS5 (and formerly Xbox Series X|S) soulslike based on Italian folklore.
  • The game has already been delayed once on Xbox previously, but now, it is delayed on Xbox “indefinitely.”
  • In comments on the developers’ Discord, Jyamma Games CEO blamed Microsoft for the delay, stating that Xbox hasn’t responded to their queries for over two months.

As someone who has been following the gaming industry for quite some time now, I can’t help but feel a sense of deja vu when it comes to the latest saga involving Enotria: The Last Song and Xbox Series X|S. It seems like every few months we have another instance where a promising game is either delayed or skips over Microsoft’s console altogether.

It’s Monday, so that means another game must be skipping Xbox.

Recently, Microsoft has faced challenges in managing public perception about its console platform. A surprising revelation at Gamescom 2024, where Indiana Jones and the Great Circle was announced for PlayStation 5, has sparked speculation that Microsoft is intentionally weakening its Xbox Series X|S platform. This suspicion is further fueled by their “no console needed” marketing strategy for Xbox Cloud Gaming on Amazon Fire TV sticks.

And now, another game just announced it is skipping Xbox in a pretty spectacular way.

Enotria: The Last Song – A Forthcoming Soulslike Game

regrettably, for now, we must postpone the release of the Xbox version indefinitely. We recognize and sympathize with the Xbox community’s disappointment, as we too share their enthusiasm. However, during our best endeavors and with the tireless work of our dedicated team, we have faced unexpected hurdles that have delayed our launch on the Xbox platform. Let me stress that this is not a hasty decision.

I’m sorry if this falls short of expectations, but I truly appreciate your understanding and patience. As an independent studio publishing our own games, your support is invaluable to us. We are committed to sharing Enotria with as wide an audience as we can.

As an analyst, I found myself drawn into a discussion that centered around the Xbox Series S following last year’s delay of Baldur’s Gate 3 on the Xbox Series X|S platform. Initially, there was widespread speculation that the issue lay with the Xbox Series S, due to Microsoft’s feature parity clauses being publicly blamed for the delay. However, upon closer examination and interactions within the developers’ Discord community server, it appears that the developers themselves are pointing fingers at Microsoft, rather than the Xbox Series S. The debate surrounding the less-powerful, yet more affordable Xbox Series S has been a contentious one, with concerns over its ability to optimally run current-gen systems. Yet, the developers seem to imply that the root of the problem may not be the console itself, but Microsoft’s policies and practices instead.

A community manager known as Creatura said “We are calm,” in response to fan questions and speculation, “I think this person is coming up with their own conclusions based on… nothing. Cause we never mentioned Series S and we are not paid by Sony.”

Jyamma Games CEO Jacky Greco had some stern words to share on the matter. “You can ask Xbox why they haven’t answered us for 2 months. Obviously they don’t care about Enotria and they don’t care about you. […] The context is open a store page and submission [sic], we’ve Xbox Series X|S version ready, but we can’t proceed with submission and release, I spent a lot of money for porting and they decided to ignore us.”

As a tech enthusiast, I can’t help but notice that Xbox seems to be under some scrutiny lately, particularly with regards to their certification process for both games and applications. It’s a situation I’ve found myself discussing before.

One step forward, two steps back

Over time, Microsoft has put in significant effort to enhance the overall support for smaller game developers on Xbox. The Xbox Game Pass has served as an effective platform, providing financial assistance to developers, leading to numerous success stories across various genres of games. Additionally, Microsoft has had success in bringing games with long periods of exclusivity from competitors to Xbox, including popular franchises like Yakuza, Dragon Quest, Persona, and even MLB: The Show. Today, we discussed the arrival of the Atelier franchise on Xbox for the first time ever. Unfortunately, every mistake surrounding Xbox currently seems more pronounced due to the other controversies that are ongoing.

It appears that Enotria’s developers have expressed dissatisfaction with Microsoft’s procedures, and they aren’t alone in their critique of Xbox’s gaming certification policies. For instance, I’ve heard that Microsoft’s certification processes were a significant factor in the long absence of Final Fantasy 14 on Xbox, due to the game’s development cycle being unable to accommodate it.

Expediting the launch of our game on Xbox poses a significant challenge given the limited communication we’re receiving from them. However, our eagerness remains undiminished.

The certification process is put in place to guarantee that games reaching the platform meet a specific standard of quality, enabling them to launch in a more finished, usable state for potential sales. However, if what the CEO of Jyamma Games claims is true, it seems that connecting with the ID@Xbox program is proving challenging at the moment, which isn’t an uncommon complaint I’ve encountered myself.

1. We’ve contacted Microsoft for their perspective, and it seems likely they may also get in touch with Jyamma Games given the current commotion. In the final analysis, it’s Xbox gamers who might be deprived of a potential fantastic game.

The game titled “Enotria: The Last Song” will debut on PlayStation 5 and PC on September 19, 2024. Unfortunately, an Xbox Series X|S version has been indefinitely postponed at this time. Don’t forget to add it to your wishlist on Steam here.
