Earlier this month, “Thief VR: Legacy of Shadow” was officially revealed.
In the video, Russell discussed the enduring impact of the Thief series, sharing that he’s carried the character with him in one form or another ever since he tried out for the part around 1995 or 1996 – a connection that has lasted for about thirty years now.
In the video below, Russell expressed his joy saying, “It’s wonderful to be reunited with him once more, as we’ve shared a rich history. I’ve truly missed him! His humor is simply remarkable, and they’ve done an exceptional job of preserving it in this latest game.
This character holds a special place for me because he was instrumental in launching my gaming career. Consequently, I have deep gratitude towards him, and it’s an immense joy to voice Garrett once more.
In Thief VR: Legacy of Shadow, a fresh character named Magpie is introduced. Interestingly, there appears to be an enigmatic connection between this newcomer and the previous protagonist, Garrett, a fact that seems to be unknown to Garrett himself. The most recent video concludes with Garrett expressing shock, as he believed Magpie was dead, and inquiring about their identity.
In its trailer reveal, the gameplay for Thief VR: Legacy of Shadow appears as a virtual reality adaptation of the original first-person stealth games. Players will navigate through grand mansions utilizing shadows, with the ultimate goal being to acquire their treasure. Various tools such as specialized arrow types, like those designed to extinguish torch flames, will assist in making stealth movements more seamless.
As a stealthy gamer, I’ll be delving into a Gothic metropolis reminiscent of the iconic Thief series, where I can skulk through rooftops and shadowy backstreets. But it’s not just about lifting coins from unsuspecting guards; sometimes, I’ll even nab keys to exclusive locations.
Regarding the storyline, details about the new game title are scarce at the moment. However, lead designer Richard Bunn has confirmed that the events unfold between the original trilogy and the 2014 reboot known as Thief. Consequently, it appears that the Orwellian surveillance element from the older games will persist in Thief VR.
In his explanation about the upcoming game “Thief VR: Legacy of Shadow,” Bunn noted that it is set between the original trilogy and the 2014 reboot. He further elaborated that this story unfolds centuries before the latter events, during a time when The City is divided by fear and controlled by surveillance under Baron Northcrest’s rule, who is obsessed with forbidden knowledge. Although the Keepers are absent, their secrets continue to be hinted at through secret glyphs and relics.
Today, both the initial Thief trilogy and the 2014 reboot remain playable on contemporary systems. The reboot can be enjoyed on modern consoles too because it was launched for PS4 and Xbox One. However, the original trilogy is only accessible on PC.
In a different phrasing, “Thief VR: Legacy of Shadow” is planned to be launched on PC VR, PlayStation VR 2, Meta Quest 2, 3, and 3S platforms.
