As a seasoned gamer with over two decades of gaming under my belt, I must admit that my heart skipped a beat when I heard about Byte Breakers. Being a die-hard fan of Super Smash Bros., the prospect of a Battle Royale spinoff piqued my interest.
the final version of the game might never see the light of day.
Instead of “Super Smash Bros. Ultimate”, which can only be played on the Nintendo Switch, “Byte Breakers” is exclusively available for play on Steam at the moment. If you’re not bothered by playing on a PC, you’re good to go and start playing immediately as Odyssey Interactive stated that all you need to do is visit the Steam page and request access. They may be allowing players in waves to manage traffic, but some people have already started playing this week, sooner than anticipated due to high demand.
According to Dax Andrus, the creator of Odyssey Interactive, it’s not about improving upon Smash. Instead, our goal is to develop a new phase in the genre that Smash initially sparked during our childhood years.
However, it’s important to note that while Byte Breakers is a prototype, it’s one of several prototypes being developed by Odyssey Interactive. They’re seeking early player feedback to determine whether Byte Breakers is worth further development or if they should move on to the next project.
If you recognize the name of the game developer, you might know Odyssey Interactive as the studio behind the 2022 release, Omega Strikers. This game introduced an ensemble of unique characters, dreamt up by developers who previously worked at renowned studios like Riot Games. The gameplay combined elements of combat, character abilities, and hockey. Interestingly, in 2023, Odyssey Interactive announced they were shifting focus from Omega Strikers to new projects within the same universe.
If you’ve played both games, you might notice that some characters share a resemblance as they are indeed the same characters across different games. Not all of these characters are playable in every game yet, but one such character is Juliette, who is featured in Omega Strikers and Byte Breakers. As development of Omega Strikers was quite prolific in adding new characters, we can hope for a similar pace with Byte Breakers in the future.
If you’re eager to try out Byte Breakers without spending a dime on Steam, simply apply for access. Be mindful that the servers might go offline occasionally during the weekend, so stay tuned to the game’s Twitter account for updates regarding playable hours, so you don’t miss your chance!
