On numerous occasions, the TV series Community playfully referenced and mimicked other television programs. However, only once did it truly succeed in merging with another sitcom’s universe (although it almost happened with The X-Files). Remarkably, this crossover was so uncommon when it initially occurred that many fans of Community may not have become aware of its existence for quite some time. In a surprising twist, Abed, a character from Community portrayed by Danny Pudi, made an appearance in an episode of Cougar Town – a show he often expressed fondness for on the series.
In Community Season 2 episode “Critical Film Studies,” Abed shared with Jeff Winger his chance to be an extra on the set of Cougar Town. He admitted that being on the set and close to the characters made him nervous, leading to him becoming so scared he even soiled himself and hurriedly left the scene.
Two months following the broadcast of an episode from Community, the penultimate episode of the second season for Cougar Town, titled “Something Good Coming, Part 1,” was aired. This episode is significant as it features Danny Pudi in a guest role, portraying Abed, and this scene was mentioned by him to Jeff during the “Critical Film Studies” episode.
The setting depicts Laurie (Busy Philipps) and Travis (Dan Byrd) conversing at an outdoor Subway table, with Abed positioned at another table nearby. His actions suggest he’s not a seasoned actor but rather someone overly eager to fit in, often pushing a bit too hard to emulate the acting style of professionals. At one instance, he fixates on Laurie and even mirrors her hand gestures excessively.
Suddenly, during their chat, Abed seems overcome with fear and swiftly exits the room. His hurried departure from the table and dash towards the bathroom disrupted the ongoing scene between Travis and Laurie. This is undeniably the incident he mentioned before, and fans of both shows finally got to witness it firsthand.
The encounter between Community and Cougar Town was the sole recognized crossover event, but it wasn’t the unique instance where actors Pudi, Philipps, and Byrd shared screen time on TV. In fact, Philipps and Byrd previously made appearances in Community, making a brief appearance in Season 2 finale titled “For A Few Paintballs More.
The series, known as Community, has consistently been ready to take an additional step to make a great punchline worthwhile. With the help of Cougar Town, Harmon and his team managed to venture into uncharted territories of other shows, all for the sake of providing their viewers with a good chuckle.
If you’ve ever wondered why Community is so well loved, that right there is a great example.
