As someone who’s been through countless controller wars and battles, I can confidently say that the standard Xbox controller just doesn’t cut it anymore. It’s like fighting with a rusty sword when everyone else has shiny, sharp ones.
For top-notch peripherals, nothing beats the best. In gaming terms, it could spell life or death. The sensation of handling a high-quality device as you outperform your opponents is unmatched. Regardless if you’re into console gaming, PC gaming, or both, controllers are essential items that see regular use.
The standard Xbox controller just isn’t enough
On personal computers, the Xbox controller is generally preferred, but did you know it has some drawbacks? I’m not here to argue about offset or inline analog sticks; instead, let’s focus on its performance and precision. Did you realize that the standard Xbox controller has relatively poor accuracy and significantly increased input lag? If you’re skeptical, take a look at this YouTube video.
Observe that the polling frequency, or how often the console looks for controller input, is adjusted to run at 250 times per second, or 250Hz. This is just the rate a PC checks for updates; the controller itself will only send updates at a rate of 124hz. Consequently, there won’t be a report during every 64th check, leading to an average input delay of approximately 6.8 milliseconds.
In simpler terms, let me clarify that the performance of this controller is significantly slower than other controllers or even mice. Normally, a mouse operates at a speed of 500 to 1000 times per second (Hz), while this Xbox controller operates at a much lower rate. Furthermore, when it comes to accuracy, third-party controllers outperform the analog sticks on this model.
I’m often recommending to friends and family who are in the market for a controller or already using one, that they should prioritize this upgrade. Particularly when it comes to PC gaming, as the Xbox controller doesn’t support overclocking, a feature that warrants further discussion. Consequently, gamers find themselves uncertain about where to invest their funds.
The answer: Razer Wolverine V2 Chroma
You could spend hundreds to combat this issue, but I have a controller that costs a little less than your standard Xbox controller, at over $100 off. The Razer Wolverine V2 Chroma not only costs under $60, but it doubles the report rate of the standard Xbox controller at 250Hz. It also clocks in at an average input latency of under 4ms. That’s over 40% faster!
This item really shines with its array of extra features. For starters, it comes equipped with six adjustable buttons that players can customize to their liking. On top of that, it boasts hair-trigger stops and tactile action buttons designed to minimize the distance needed for button presses. It’s like pressing a crisp, responsive mechanical keyboard key instead of a squishy game controller button!
The only negative of this controller is the fact that it requires a wired connection. If you’re looking for a wireless version, you’ll need to spring quite a bit more for the Razer Wolverine V3 Pro, which we also recently reviewed here at Windows Central. It even reaches an average latency when overclocked by one millisecond!
Without hesitation, I highly suggest the Razer Wolverine V2 Chroma. It’s currently priced just right for gamers seeking an upgrade to top-tier controllers without overspending on options like the V3 Chroma or Thrustmaster eSwap Pro X. Although you could invest more in a controller that might deliver superior performance, you’d end up spending well over $150, and in my view, it would be wiser to allocate those funds towards improving other aspects of your gaming setup. After all, diminishing returns is indeed a tangible concept.
