Ever since 2020, I’ve stumbled upon some truly chilling indie horror games that have masterfully depicted the unnerving uncertainty lurking around ordinary folks. From home invasions to cosmic terrors where you question if the person knocking on your door is human or an imposter, these experiences have made me more than a little wary of stepping outside or engaging in small talk. After all, who can blame me for being cautious about strangers? Even after the pandemic subsided, I’ve continued to instruct delivery people to leave packages and food at my door. I crave some fresh air and a connection with nature, but how can I when there are imposters, deranged killers, and downright bizarre neighbors roaming about? However, maybe life isn’t as terrifyingly unpredictable as indie horror games might lead me to believe.
Amidst all the spooky happenings, there’s an overly friendly cartoon character inviting me for dinner at his house. As a newcomer to the area, I yearn to belong and make friends. We all need companionship, don’t we? I try not to judge based on first impressions or appearances. Yet, have you noticed my neighbor Theo? There seems to be something deeply unsettling about him. I can’t quite put my finger on it, but there’s a sense of disquiet and unease surrounding him. His conversations send shivers down my spine, and his gaze feels like a probing dagger that erodes any self-assuredness I possess just to be here. There’s an ominous aura about him, seeping from the basement. A darkness that seems impossible to evade.
Thanks Eli Stevens—I Hate It
Chatting Over Chowder,” a chilling, free-to-play horror game by Eli Stevens that has left me dreading any future dinner invitations. A newcomer in the area, Theo – who seems friendly enough – extends an invitation for dinner and a heart-to-heart. However, Theo’s fascination with conversation borders on peculiar; he’s somewhat like Morty post-detox in Rick & Morty and Salad Fingers combined, as he says things that are downright bizarre. He’s meticulous about making you listen to his eccentric interests, strong opinions, and idiosyncrasies without giving you a chance to respond or escape.
There’s not much to appreciate about this place, quite the contrary, there’s a lot to dislike. However, Theo remains unaware of this. This is because making Theo upset could lead to being confined in his basement, a place where his “pets” reside. This basement is cramped, lacks food, and instills fear. If you don’t want to share this fate during meal times, you must endure the ordeal.
Everything is Telling Me to Run
What is it about this game that keeps me so tense? I’ve been playing horror games since my teenage years, but very few have made me feel as uneasy as this one. If you’re like me, someone who struggles with social anxiety and finds small talk challenging, you might find that Discussion Over Dinner remarkably encapsulates the discomfort of crafting coherent sentences without seeming strange.
Perhaps it’s Theo’s persistent stare or the way he disregards my personal boundaries by leaning into me, that leaves me feeling as though I could sink into the ground and disappear, just to escape his presence for a while longer.
The Uncanny Valley
The cartoonish style of “Discussion Over Dinner” is appropriate given that many well-known series such as “Bad Parenting” and “Baldi’s Basics” employ this simplistic aesthetic to deceive us into perceiving friendliness and innocence when, in reality, they are quite the opposite. The oversized head, gigantic ears and eyes, thin lips, and spindly legs create an unusual and eerie image that makes Theo appear less than human.
The cartoon design of “Discussion Over Dinner” fits because many popular shows like “Bad Parenting” and “Baldi’s Basics” use simple art to trick us into thinking they are friendly, but they aren’t. The big head, ears, eyes, small lips, and long legs make the character seem strange and unrealistic, almost inhuman.
As soon as he speaks, you find yourself on high alert, your muscles tensed and ready for potential attack, fearful that this man may suddenly lunge at any moment. Caught between facing the terror before you and averting your gaze to carefully select your words, knowing a misstep could be fatal.
The Mystery, The Horror
What makes me uneasy isn’t the terrifying banging coming from the basement where past victims plead for help. Instead, it’s the fact that Theo prepared steak for you, but he himself doesn’t touch it. What kind of meat are you consuming? I find his eyes to be unusually large, and they seem to dilate when he shakes your hand. It all feels like a power game. Is Theo sexually excited by this situation? I don’t want to know the answers to any of these questions.
In natural and easy-to-read language:
What truly disturbs me isn’t the loud, fearful noises from the basement where past victims cry for help. Instead, it’s that Theo cooked steak for you but didn’t eat it himself. What type of meat are you eating? I find his eyes to be unusually large, and they seem to grow bigger when he shakes your hand. It all feels like a game of control. Is Theo getting sexual pleasure from this situation? I don’t want to know the answers to any of these questions.
For a brief instant, I ponder: Is this more about how we judge others, or maybe it’s our deepest apprehensions of what might go wrong that prevents us from genuinely connecting? However, I’m reminded that Theo’s friendliness is merely a disguise concealing the evil lurking within him, yearning to be unleashed.
As a gamer, let me tell you, Discussion Over Dinner isn’t just an awkward or uncomfortable experience – it’s pure, palpable anxiety. The challenge of juggling conversation, food, and distractions makes it feel like I’m playing a stress simulator. It’s a game that pushes me to my limits, and sometimes I wonder if I’ll ever conquer the high stakes of social dining… Or at least I hope people aren’t really this tough in real life!
