‘This Death Was My Fave’: Pedro Pascal Compares The Last of Us to Game of Thrones

Season 2 didn’t hold back, portraying in vivid detail the game’s most contentious incident. According to Pedro Pascal, filming Joel’s demise was such an impactful experience that it rivals a comparable scene from “Game of Thrones.

Pedro Pascal openly discussed his numerous on-screen demises while reminiscing about his past. He candidly admitted, “I die a lot.” In some instances, it was fitting (and expected); taking on the role of the main adversary in “The Equalizer 2” and “Kingsman: The Golden Circle,” it was gratifying to witness Pascal’s characters meet untimely, violent ends. However, Joel’s scene in the latest episode of “The Last of Us” was a different story; the unexpected turn of events caused a stir among viewers, particularly those unfamiliar with Joel’s narrative in the video games.

In a playful yet poignant manner, Pascal seemed to swiftly move through the stages of grief regarding Joel’s fate in “The Last of Us,” even making light-hearted comparisons to Oberyn Martell’s death in “Game of Thrones.” Reflecting on this, he mused, “I think this is the best one, no, it’s in competition, I think, with Game of Thrones. It has to be. I love the golf club. I’m going to start golf.” This remark was a nod to the golf club used by Abby (played by Kaitlyn Dever) to kill Joel, and Dever humorously replied with, “You going to bridge the gap in this relationship and make it right?” as the second season of “The Last of Us” released its most emotionally taxing episode yet, but the cast collectively agreed.

‘The Series Is Based On Very Specific Source Material’

Pascal acknowledged that Joel’s death being featured in Season 1 was a known aspect of the project from the start, as he put it, “[Series creators Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann told me], “You’re going to die”. I replied, “Alright, I’m game!” This is because the series is deeply rooted in its source material, so the commitment to fully explore Season 1 over an extended period of 11-12 months in Alberta was always part of the plan. The concept was that the second season would undergo a significant transformation, which is why things unfolded this way.

Over nearly three decades, Pascal has built a diverse acting career. He started with the 1996 short film “Burning Bridges,” and since then, he’s been featured in both high-profile and indie productions. However, it was his role as Oberyn Martell (the Red Viper of Dorne) in “Game of Thrones” that truly brought him into the limelight, with fans remembering him for being both alluring and detestable. This role opened doors for him to star in “Narcos,” “The Mandalorian,” and “The Fantastic Four.” Some might recall his brief stint in “Buffy the Vampire Slayer”; his character was introduced and written off in a single episode. Pascal hinted that he’s reprising Joel in flashback scenes for “The Last of Us,” providing some comfort to fans who miss his character.

New episodes of premiere Sundays on HBO and Max.
