This Game Blocked Your PC from Updating to Windows 11—Here’s Why

If there was a restriction preventing your computer from updating to the newest version of Windows 11, Microsoft has now removed it, potentially enabling your PC to undergo the update process.

This past week, I discovered that Microsoft lifted a restriction that previously prohibited computers running Asphalt 8 (Airborne) from updating to the Windows 11 version 24H2.

Microsoft outlined the initial issue back in September 2024:

Following the installation of Windows 11, version 24H2, you may encounter problems with the Asphalt 8 (Airborne) game. The game might freeze up due to an error while in use or upon exiting, requiring you to restart the game to resolve the error.

To ensure a smooth update process for you, we’ve temporarily restricted the installation of Windows 11, version 24H2 via the Windows Update channel on devices running Asphalt 8. This means these specific devices will not receive the update through this method. IT administrators using the Windows Update for Business reports can track this issue using its safeguard ID: 52796746. In simpler terms, certain devices with Asphalt 8 installed have been put on hold from receiving the Windows 11, version 24H2 update through the usual update channels until further notice.

As a researcher, I advise against attempting a manual upgrade to version 24H2 of Windows 11 through the Installation Assistant or Media Creation Tool until we’ve resolved the current issue.

Microsoft’s documentation confirms the issue has been resolved and the hold lifted.

If your PC was affected, the Windows 11 version 24H2 update may take up to 48 hours to appear.

It’s uncertain exactly how numerous systems encountered issues due to the compatibility problem. Notably, Asphalt 8, which was initially released for computers in 2018 when Windows 8 was still prevalent, may have been one of the affected systems.
