As a devoted fan, I’ve been eagerly awaiting the unveiling of Oblivion Remastered all year long. Rumors about this highly anticipated remake of The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion, originally released in 2006, had been circulating for two years now, in 2023. Despite the fact that avid gamers like myself were well aware that a release was imminent at some point, Bethesda and their collaborators at Virtuos Games managed to catch everyone off guard with an unexpected early release of the remaster earlier this week. The surprise has only served to heighten my anticipation for diving back into the magical world of Cyrodiil!
So far, Oblivion Remastered has seen an incredible surge in popularity, outdoing even a powerful Immolating Blast from a Master-level spell. On Steam, it’s consistently ranked among the top sellers and regularly attracts over 100,000 players on weekdays alone. It’s available not just on Steam, but also on Xbox Series X|S, the Xbox PC app, and PS5. Players using these platforms can access Cyrodiil through Xbox Game Pass, and remarkably, some have even managed to dive in with Virtual Reality (VR).
I became aware of this when I saw a popular video on social media last night showcasing the start of a game being played in VR. In the clip, they were using motion controls to navigate and attack enemies from Mythic Dawn, demonstrating that the RPG could be fully played with the mod installed. You can view it here:
Upon further investigation, it was discovered that the mod in question is UEVR – a tool designed to convert selected Unreal Engine games into immersive 6DOF VR experiences with relative ease when integrated during gameplay. As Oblivion Remastered was developed using Unreal Engine 5, this software is compatible and activates crucial VR functionalities such as 3DOF motion controls, comprehensive 6DOF head tracking, overlaying the game UI into the environment, and more. It’s adaptable with a variety of headsets like Oculus, Valve Index, Vive, Meta Quest, Windows Mixed Reality, and others.
If you’d like to attempt setting up VR in the remake yourself, the official UEVR GitHub page offers guidance and a downloadable mod for that purpose. You might also find it beneficial to join the Flatscreen to VR Modding Community Discord server linked on the UEVR page. This community can provide assistance if you encounter any difficulties during the process.
Fans were astonished to have Virtual Reality (VR) functionality for Oblivion Remastered operational just hours after its release yesterday. For many, the chance to re-live their cherished childhood RPG in an immersive VR format has been a long-awaited dream. As VR content creator GingasVR expressed during a stream, “It’s Oblivion in VR! I’ve waited 20 years for this, dude!” Swinging her sword with motion controls, she exclaimed, “This is everything I’ve ever dreamt of. By Azura, by Azura, by Azura!

If you’re eager to discover more about Oblivion Remastered, I advise taking a look at our comprehensive guides detailing the features in each version of the game, the modifications made by the remake, and the technical requirements and specifications for the PC version. We’ll soon be publishing an evaluation-style review of the remaster, so keep an eye out for that update.
Keep in mind that although Oblivion Remastered originally retails for $49.99, it’s currently on sale at various third-party vendors such as Fanatical, CDKeys, and Green Man Gaming. The most significant discount is available at Fanatical, where you can purchase the remastered game for only $41.49. Furthermore, you can enjoy playing this remade classic through Microsoft’s Xbox Game Pass, which is accessible on both Xbox Series X|S and Windows PC platforms.
