As someone who grew up playing classic JRPGs on old-school consoles, I can’t help but feel a deep sense of nostalgia and excitement at the news that Square Enix has finally released a playable demo for Visions of Mana, the long-awaited fifth mainline entry in the beloved Mana series.

Square Enix has made available a free demo for the upcoming Japanese role-playing game, Visions of Mana, which is the long-awaited fifth installment in the cherished Mana series from Square Enix. This marks the first mainline Mana title to hit the market in close to twenty years.

Players can experience a sample of the game’s gameplay and narrative in the demo, which is currently accessible for download on Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and PC through Steam.

In Visions of Mana, you assume the role of Val, a devoted Soul Guardian, whose responsibility is to safeguard individuals marked as ‘Alms’ by Fairies. These special people embark on a global voyage to revitalize the colossal, enchanted Tree of Mana. This monumental tree is the primary source of mana, which sustains the world. Every fourth year, an Alms must offer themselves as a sacrifice to the tree, ensuring its survival and enabling it to continue nourishing the world.

As a fellow enthusiast, here’s how I might put it: Embark on this journey with me, where you’ll encounter intricate characters who will become companions on our quest. Delve into a breathtaking landscape brimming with mystery and enchantment. Prepare to be engrossed in a heartfelt narrative that unfolds the tale of personal growth and the weight of sacrifice.

1. In the demo version, gamers can experience a slice of the opening chapter of Visions of Mana, immersing themselves in its captivating narrative, discovering its lush environment, and testing the intricate blend of martial arts and elemental magic within its battle system to secure victory.

To entice players to experience the demonstration version, we’re offering exclusive in-game rewards that can be unlocked when you play. These unique items will be available for use in the complete game, set for release on August 29, 2024.

These items are:

  • Gladius (a short sword for Val which you obtain the moment he becomes playable in Chapter 1)
  • Falx (a great sword for Val which you obtain once you change to the wind class for the first time)
  • Horn Lance (a lance for Val which you obtain once you unlock the ability to change classes).

1. In order to access these items, the player needs to have saved data from the demo and should download the most recent update for the complete game once it is released.

As a game analyst, I can assure you that the advancements made during the demo will not directly translate to the final product. The demo presents a condensed version of the game’s opening act. While some elements may seem similar, the full experience, including extensive content, will only be accessible in the complete version of the game.

Are you ready to witness the majesty of the Tree of Mana?

During the 1990s, The Mana series was highly regarded among fans of classic JRPGs. Among its most iconic titles is Secret of Mana from 1993, which was released on Super Nintendo. These games stood out for their charming visuals, engaging action-RPG gameplay, and whimsical stories of adventure.

Fans have been eagerly anticipating a new addition to the Mana series since the release of Dawn of Mana back in 2006 for PlayStation 2. With such a lengthy hiatus, spanning over 18 years, fans were kept engaged with spin-offs and remakes of earlier games.

Though I didn’t grow up playing the Mana series, I can only imagine the elation longtime fans feel as they witness the return of this cherished franchise after such a lengthy absence. The initial glimpses we’ve been given are truly captivating, with their stunning art design, enthralling and intricate battle mechanics, and endearing cast of playable characters promising an unforgettable experience.

Later on, I’m planning to try out the demo for the upcoming Xbox JRPG/PC title, as I’m curious to discover what I’ve been overlooking and to assess its potential for becoming one of the standout Xbox JRPGs, or even one of the top-tier Xbox and PC games overall, once the complete version is released in August.

2024 marks the launch date for Visions of Mana, which will be available across various platforms including Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and PC through Steam on August 29th.
