This Netflix Original Anime Just Broke a Major Streaming Record

The anime adaptation of Yuto Suzuki’s manga, Sakamoto Days, by TMS Entertainment, is still going strong on Netflix, setting new records for the streaming service. It only recently debuted (with three episodes available at the time of this writing), but it has already climbed its way into the Top 10 most-watched shows of the week and currently holds the fourth spot. However, what’s even more remarkable is that it has accomplished this feat in just three episodes.

In my perspective as an avid anime enthusiast, “Sakamoto Days” chronicles Taro Sakamoto’s life, a former assassin yearning to run a convenience store with his family. However, a brush with the mob places a 1 billion yen bounty on his head, forcing him to employ creative, non-violent strategies to eliminate the assassins after him. Despite the split opinions within the fan community over its anime adaptation, “Sakamoto Days” has shattered a significant Netflix record.

Sakamoto Days Is Netflix’s Most Successful Anime Launch Yet

Based on information provided by Netflix and journalist @Real_Kilometers, it’s been revealed that the new anime series Sakamoto Days has become Netflix’s most-viewed original anime since they started sharing weekly viewership data. With over 8.6 million views since its premiere on January 11, this series surpasses Season 2 of Baki Hanma, which garnered 6 million views, and even outperforms the second part of Record of Ragnarok from 2023 that topped viewership on Netflix in the same year with 3 million views. It’s notable that Sakamoto Days managed to surpass both these shows, which had established fan bases due to their initial seasons, thanks primarily to its existing fan base from a successful manga.

Right now, “Sakamoto Days” ranks as the second most viewed non-English series on Netflix, trailing behind the second season of “Squid Game,” which amassed an impressive 13.2 million viewing hours during the week of January 13th-19th. The total number of views on Netflix is calculated by taking into account the hours spent watching compared to the total hours of content available for viewing.

Since Netflix began tracking weekly viewership, ‘Sakamoto Days’ has become their largest anime debut, surpassing the second season of ‘Baki Hanma’. This popular adaptation garnered 8.6 million views, ranking it as the second most-watched non-English TV show on Netflix and the fourth overall.

Why Is Sakamoto Days Dividing the Fan Base?

Although Netflix seems to be promoting Sakamoto Days quite heavily, it’s not resonating as well with fans of Yuto Suzuki’s manga. Before its release, many manga enthusiasts voiced their concerns about TMS Entertainment’s animation style and quality, the opening theme by Vaundy, and the voice actors chosen for the series.

As a dedicated fan myself, I must say that while the initial episode of this show has certainly captured the hearts of many, garnering a commendable 7.96 rating on MyAnimeList from no less than 26,128 viewers, there are some devoted manga enthusiasts who feel slightly disappointed with the anime adaptation. Regardless of their reservations, I have high hopes that Sakamoto Days will enjoy a long-lasting presence on Netflix. Given the immense popularity of Season 1, it’s only a matter of time before the greenlight for a second season is swiftly given following the release of the second cour of episodes this coming July.
