This Rapunzel Fairy Tale Rewrite Will Leave You Horrified and Intrigued!

The latest series from Weekly Young Jump, titled “Fairy Tale Crown,” is penned by Aka Akasaka and illustrated by Azychika. Notably, Aoi Kujira, who created the “Greek Circle Crisis,” will also be contributing as a series composer. Akasaka is well-known for his work on “Kaguya-sama: Love Is War” and “Oshi no Ko,” both of which have garnered considerable popularity. Immediately following the conclusion of “Oshi no Ko” last year, Akasaka swiftly announced a new venture. In this instance, he’s opting for a fresh direction as the narrative unfolds in a magical realm inspired by classic fairy tales. To illustrate this manga is Azychika, a collective pseudonym used by a group of artists who previously worked on “Record of Ragnarok.

In February 2025, the launch date and magazine where the series would be published were unveiled for Märchen Crown. This intriguing series has now been introduced in Japan, with its initial release happening simultaneously. Global enthusiasts can access the manga on the Manga Plus app, which hosts Shueisha’s completed and ongoing works. What came as a surprise to many is that Märchen Crown, initially marketed as a “fairy tale romance,” includes an unexpected chilling twist.

What Is the Plot of Märchen Crown?

In a magical realm, there resides a secluded tower, home to an adolescent girl named Rapunzel, isolated from the rest of the world. The tower nestles in the heartwood of the forest, and it’s shrouded by a fearsome enchantress who discourages anyone from venturing near it. Despite the terror that surrounds the witch and her powers, Rapunzel places her trust in the individual who nurtured her. The witch warns of a perilous world teeming with malicious individuals, but Rapunzel has never left the tower or experienced the world outside her tower walls.

She hadn’t encountered a simple village boy, young in years, until then. His home was nestled by an ancient tale, whispering about a witch’s tower hidden deep within the old Northern Forest. Intrigued and eager to unravel the truth, he set off on a quest to locate the enigmatic structure. The boy had a knack for scaling great heights, so he bravely ascended to the highest chamber of the tower, despite the danger it posed. Yet, rather than meeting an ominous witch, he beheld a girl as radiant and pure as a blooming flower. In a moment of surprise, he blurted out the name “Rosa,” which means multiflora in his language.

They frequently get together, and as Rapunzel becomes increasingly curious about the outside world, they find themselves developing feelings for each other. Eager to experience the world beyond her tower, she asks Mikel to accompany her to his village, drawn by tales he’s shared. However, what she discovers surpasses the beauty and enchantment of his stories – a revelation far more stunning than she could have imagined.

Märchen Crown Turns Dark From the First Chapter

In 1812, the Brothers Grimm published their collection titled “Children’s and Household Tales,” which included the original tale of Rapunzel. Since then, this story has undergone various adaptations while maintaining its core idea of a girl confined in a tower by a witch. The narrative primarily follows Rapunzel’s story and love affair with her suitor, who she meets on multiple occasions. As Rapunzel ventures out into the world for the first time after living secluded in the tower for such an extended period, she experiences excitement mixed with apprehension due to the overwhelming nature of the outside world.

When Rapunzel arrives at Mikel’s settlement, she’s shocked to find a peculiar creature there, seemingly expecting them. What leaves her bewildered is that Mikel greets this monster as his uncle. Frightened, she swiftly flees the scene, leaving Mikel puzzled. It turns out that the entire village is inhabited by such creatures, and Mikel is attempting to persuade everyone that Rapunzel is an ally. The unsettling nature of the village might not be the only peculiar aspect about Mikel, as he seems perplexed as to why she’s afraid, since this “outside world” is exactly what she yearns to explore.

This captivating tale begins with a mesmerizing blend of terror within a classic fairy tale romance setting. The artwork is stunningly beautiful and offers a unique ambiance compared to Record of Ragnarok, yet it remains meticulously detailed and effectively conveys the horror elements. It’s revealed that the witch was indeed correct in her beliefs. As for now, Mikel dwells as the lone human in his village. The manga debuted both Chapter 0 (as a prologue) and its first chapter simultaneously, and it will be serialized weekly. Thus, readers in North America can anticipate the next installment on March 25th.
