This remake of an underrated PlayStation horror game has a release date — here's when you can play it

What you need to know

  • Earlier in the year, PlayStation announced a rebuilt version of Supermassive Games’ Until Dawn, a narrative-driven horror game where the choices players make determine who lives and dies.
  • The Until Dawn remake is being handled by Ballistic Moon, a team in the U.K. that includes some of the original staff from Supermassive Games.
  • This new version of Until Dawn now has a release date of Oct. 4, 2024, where it’ll be available across PlayStation 5 and Windows PC.

As an analyst who has spent countless hours immersed in the world of video games, I must say that the upcoming remake of Until Dawn ignites a sense of nostalgia and anticipation within me. Having played the original game multiple times, I can attest to its unique blend of narrative horror storytelling that masterfully weaves foreshadowing and tropes into something truly special.

We’ve got an exact release date for returning to Blackwood Mountain.

On October 4, 2024, the remake of Until Dawn will be released, simultaneously on PlayStation 5 and Windows PC platforms. According to a post on the PlayStation Blog made on Wednesday, this new rendition of Supermassive Games’ 2015 narrative horror game is being developed by Ballistic Moon Studio in the U.K., featuring some original developers as part of their team.

With Unreal Engine 5, Ballistic Moon has revamped and enhanced the gaming experience, boosting graphical quality through technologies such as ray tracing and offering various camera perspectives. Check out the comparison video below for a sneak peek:

Despite Ballistic Moon aiming to keep the game’s storyline consistent, they have confirmed an expansion in the prologue. The developers have included extra details and interchanges to provide a more compelling introduction to the key events in the game, offering players a richer insight into the Washington family’s background.

Additional modifications incorporate fresh mini zones and interconnections, along with hidden treasures to spot. The development team has also implemented new accessibility options, albeit specifics are currently scant. Earlier mentioned, the game boasts an entirely novel soundtrack, skillfully crafted by Mark Korven, who has previously contributed to film scores such as The Witch and The Lighthouse.

Preorders for the Until Dawn remake are slated to open up on August 21.

Analysis: A good spooky time

I truly love Until Dawn! It stands out as one of the best exclusive games from PlayStation during the PS4 era, demonstrating exceptional narrative horror storytelling by skillfully combining subtle foreshadowing with classic horror elements. The upcoming remake has me genuinely excited, especially if it improves accessibility and is made available on PC, potentially making it more accessible to players who haven’t had a chance to experience it before. It’s exciting to see PlayStation Studios games expanding to the PC platform, and releasing it around Halloween, as I anticipated, seems fitting.

In the new version, I’m questioning the altered camera angles since the fixed camera in the original game effectively conveyed the grandeur and cinematic feel of the action. The changes shown in the comparison trailer leave me uncertain, but it might be that these specific instances are exceptions rather than the rule.

Are you wondering as well if there are any minor adjustments or additions made to the story that might hint towards a possible sequel in the future?
