Hey, you guyyyyys!
It brings us great pleasure to share that The Goonies still manages to be as heartwarming and entertaining, over three decades since it was initially released in theaters, having been produced by Steven Spielberg and directed by Richard Donner. This classic film follows an eclectic bunch of kids on their quest to uncover a long-lost pirate’s treasure.
And let’s not forget their ultimate goal: Save their families’ homes from foreclosure.
In a movie exploring the highs and lows of unwavering camaraderie, the characters who swore eternal allegiance to their Goon Docks crew (an oath that was said to be more complex according to rumors) relied not only on an ancient map but ultimately in their trust for one another. What’s not to admire about this enduring principle?
Simultaneously, the film boasts an impressive lineup of familiar faces, including major stars and seasoned character actors such as Josh Brolin, who was just 16 at the time and making his screen debut. To add to that, a freshly crowned Academy Award recipient.
2023 presented a chance to pay tribute to the iconic Truffle Shuffle, inspired by Ke Huy Quan’s triumphant Best Supporting Actor Oscar win for his comeback role in “Everything Everywhere All At Once”.
In the interim, I didn’t abandon Hollywood altogether; rather, I enrolled in a film school at USC and became fully immersed in the pursuit of knowledge about the art of movie-making.
In an interview with Empire published in January, Quan shared that he aimed to gain knowledge in every aspect of film production – from pre-production (like scriptwriting and cinematography) to post-production (editing, sound). His hope was that this newfound understanding would enable him to start a career behind the camera.
Following his remarkable return, the 55-year-old remarked, “I aspire to portray roles that I didn’t have a chance to before in my youth.
You won’t have to embark on an exhausting quest to learn about the current activities of his fellow daring treasure hunters; instead, here’s a guide for you. Take a look at the cast of The Goonies from back then and their present day lives.
Decades prior to his infamous act of vanishing half the Earth’s population, the son of actor James Brolin initially made a name for himself by portraying Brandon Walsh. This character was known for being both cool and exasperated, yet also protective and compassionate towards his younger brother Mikey. Mikey’s relentless pursuit of One-Eyed Willie’s hidden treasure served as the catalyst for the ensuing events.
After a series of films, Brolin took on roles such as those in “Flirting With Disaster,” “Mimic,” the Academy Award-winning “No Country for Old Men” which marked a career resurgence, “American Gangster,” “W.,” “Milk” where he was nominated for an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for his portrayal of Harvey Milk’s killer Dan White, “Jonah Hex,” “True Grit,” “Sicario,” and the Marvel Universe movies “Avengers: Infinity War” and “Endgame” where he was digitally transformed as the formidable villain Thanos. Additionally, he played significant roles in the updated “Dune” and Amazon Prime Video’s sci-fi western series “Outer Range.
He has two kids from his marriage to Alice Adair. After that, he was with Diane Lane from 2004 until 2013. Since 2016, Brolin and his wife Kathryn Boyd have welcomed two daughters into their family – Westlyn Reign and Chapel Grace.
Discussing “The Goonies”, Brolin reminisced about his first job during an interview on Conan in 2012. He explained, “It’s amazing to see how this movie has impacted each generation. I have seven-year-olds today who exclaim, ‘oh my goodness’, when they mention Sloth, and I always have to clarify, ‘I’m not Sloth! I played the older brother, but look at me now with this beard and everything!'”
Hardly, but a dose of self-deprecatory humor is always in fashion too.
In 1984, the actor with Vietnamese and American heritage first appeared on the big screen as Short Round in Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, later playing the imaginative character Richard “Data” Wang in The Goonies. He then transitioned to full-time television roles on Together We Stand and Head of the Class, but aside from minor appearances in Tales From the Crypt and Encino Man (with Sean Astin), Quan mostly stepped away from acting to focus on stunt choreography (such as for X-Men) or other behind-the-scenes work. Additionally, he earned a degree from the School of Cinematic Arts at USC.
18 years after his last appearance on the big screen, he made a comeback in the widely praised sci-fi drama “Everything Everywhere All at Once”, starring alongside Michelle Yeoh and James Hong.
In the “Reunited Apart” reunion, Quan shared that he returned to acting due to films such as “Crazy Rich Asians”. He mentioned that these movies have significantly expanded the possibilities for actors within the Asian community.
His work on the movie earned him several awards, including the 2023 Golden Globe, the SAG Award, and an Oscar, among other notable recognitions.
In my own journey as a lifestyle guide, I stumbled upon a hidden map much like the one from “The Goonies,” which inspired me to carve out an extraordinary path for myself. This led me to shine in the timeless sports epic “Rudy” and embody the humble yet heroic Samwise Gamgee in the legendary “Lord of the Rings” trilogy.
The child of actors John Astin and Patty Duke temporarily halted their acting career to complete their degree at UCLA, but beyond that, they’ve been busy with roles on shows like The Big Bang Theory, Stranger Things, Young Rock, and The Conners.
Astin, who tied the knot with Christine Harrell in 1992, is blessed with three lovely daughters named Alexandra, Elizabeth, and Isabella.
Looking back, Lawrence “Chunk” Cohen wasn’t as chubby as he seemed, given it was the mid-80s. His memorable role in The Goonies was just one of his achievements. He also appeared on TV (in shows like Ask Max, Family Ties, and the Disney Channel movie Perfect Harmony), before transitioning to a different area of the entertainment industry.
After earning his degree from UC Berkeley, he spent summers working at film studios and an internship in Universal’s legal department. This sparked his interest in entertainment law, leading him to attend UCLA Law School, graduating in the year 2000. At the age of 27, along with Jonathan Gardner, he established Cohen Gardner, a firm based in Beverly Hills. In 2008, Cohen was recognized on The Hollywood Reporter’s list of “Next Generation: Hollywood’s Top 35 Executives Under 35.
Cohen shared with THR that he, himself, has previously been in the position of a client in such transactions. This gives him a deep understanding and compassion for the talent involved in this industry.
On one aspect of his work, he contributed articles on business, law, and politics for both Huffington Post and CNBC.com. In 2015, he released his debut book titled “The Dealmaker’s Ten Commandments: Ten Crucial Tools for Business Honed in the Battleground of Hollywood“.
Cohen Gardner has worked with a diverse range of high-profile clients, such as actress Michelle Yeoh, film director Ryan Coogler who became famous for “Black Panther”, and the acclaimed Bong Joon Ho, who won an Oscar for directing “Parasite”.
For the very first time on screen, Green portrayed the role of Andrea, a beloved neighborhood girl. Instead of sticking to the ordinary life, she chose excitement with the Goonies and her dear Brand, rather than the arrogant jock, Troy.
Green debuted as the charming Andrea, the neighbor girl, in her first film. She opted for a thrilling journey with the Goonies and her sweetheart Brand instead of the obnoxious jock, Troy.
After appearing in the John Candy comedy “Summer Rental” and the groundbreaking 1986 coming-of-age film “Lucas” alongside Corey Haim, Green took a break from acting to focus on studying art at Vassar instead.
She made appearances in a few other movies, such as “Bellyfruit” from 1999, which she also co-wrote and directed. Additionally, she was seen on shows like “Mad About You,” “ER,” and most recently on “Law & Order: SVU” in 2001. After that, she shifted her focus away from acting.
In a somewhat secluded manner, Green – a married mother – tends to keep her personal life under wraps. However, she participated in a virtual gathering arranged by ardent fan Josh Gad, celebrating the 35th anniversary of the beloved film, “The Goonies”.
And, according to Green, no one has ever gone up to her and exclaimed, “Andy, you Gooooonie!”
In the 1980s, Feldman’s career took off at a rapid pace. He started by voicing Copper, the puppy, in Disney’s “The Fox and the Hound” and played Tommy Jarvis, the boy who survived, in “Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter”. This was followed by roles in “Stand by Me”, “The Lost Boys”, “License to Drive”, “The ‘Burbs”, and “Dream a Little Dream”. Following his portrayal of smart aleck Clark “Mouth” Devereaux in “The Goonies”, these films were part of his busy acting schedule during that decade.
As I’ve grown older, the spotlight may have shifted to less conventional roles, but my presence in the entertainment industry remains undiminished. I’ve shared my journey on A&E’s reality show, “The Two Coreys,” alongside my longtime friend and ’80s co-star, the late Corey Haim. Our camaraderie was not just limited to the screen; we were partners in many of our projects during those dynamic ’80s years. Tragically, Corey passed away in 2010.
One issue that has been close to my heart is the fight against child sexual abuse in Hollywood, a struggle I’ve taken up after alleging that both Corey and I were unfortunate victims of such abuses. I penned my memoir, “Coreyography,” in 2013, sharing my story with the world. Additionally, I’ve released five albums: three as a solo artist and two with my band, Truth Movement.
In the past, he was wedded to Vanessa Marcil and model Susie Sprague, the latter being the mother of his child Zen. Later, in the year 2016, Feldman tied the knot with Courtney Anne Mitchell.
In several movies about growing up in the 80s, Plimpton portrayed Andrea’s sarcastic best friend Stefanie. As their journey unfolded, Stefanie gradually grew fond of Clark and his quick wit.
Or:
Plimpton, a recognizable figure from ’80s adolescence films, took on the role of Andrea’s sharp-tongued buddy Stefanie. Throughout their shared escapade, Stefanie developed feelings for Clark (and his humor) over time.
Later on, she acted in “The Mosquito Coast” and “Running on Empty,” starring alongside River Phoenix (with whom she had a relationship), and had supporting roles in numerous other productions such as “Parenthood,” “Beautiful Girls,” “I Shot Andy Warhol,” “200 Cigarettes,” “Dante’s Inferno.” She’s also quite active on stage, having been nominated for three Tony Awards. She was also nominated for an Emmy for her performance as a comically overburdened family matriarch in “Raising Hope” and won in 2012 for her guest role in a drama series called “The Good Wife.” Her recent TV appearances include “The Blacklist” and “Brockmire,” and she voiced Yelena in “Frozen II” in 2019.
Speaking with The Believer in 2013, Plimpton mentioned the abundance of independent films on her resume. She explained, “My unusual facial features and expressive mannerisms didn’t entirely stem from my personal choices. My face has quirks that make it difficult to fit the mold of a traditional ingenue. An ingenue is a young, pretty actress whose features allow easy projection of emotions and fantasies. I, however, bring additional elements – muscles in my face that move unpredictably when I speak, which I’m often unaware of. As a result, I was never the typical romantic lead. Given my age and the type of films at the time, I was destined to be a character actress. But, as it turned out, this unexpected path worked out quite well for me.
Besides her literary pursuits, Plimpton is deeply engaged in political activism too. She frequently champions causes like Planned Parenthood and the rights of the LGBTQ+ community.
In a transformation that took a full five hours, the towering 6-foot-8 football player-turned-actor was made over to portray Sloth, the Fratelli brother who was shackled to a chair by his own family until he formed an alliance with Chunk, ultimately helping to save the day.
In 1981, Matuszak retired from the Oakland Raiders after winning two Super Bowls with them. However, his acting career started earlier, in 1979, with the drama-comedy “North Dallas Forty.” The story of Nick Nolte’s character, a football star trapped in drug-induced excesses, resonated deeply with Matuszak due to its similarities to his own experiences. He later chronicled his turbulent on-field and off-field days in his 1987 autobiography titled “Cruisin’ With the Tooz.
As a devoted admirer, I’d like to highlight my journey that began with gracing the screen in the film “One Crazy Summer,” starring John Cusack. Post my breakout role in “The Goonies,” I accumulated numerous television credits. This included a stint on a brief series titled “Hollywood Beat” and appearances on popular shows such as “Hunter,” “The A-Team,” and “Miami Vice.
Regrettably, Matuszak passed away in 1989 due to a combination of factors, primarily an accidental overdose of prescription drugs, complications from an enlarged heart, and pneumonia. Additionally, traces of cocaine were found in his system. At the time of his death, he was only 38 years old.
The versatile character actor portrayed the clumsy Fratelli brother Francis prior to starring in a variety of films such as La Bamba, Empire of the Sun, The Fugitive, Bad Boys, The Matrix, Memento, The Sopranos, Bad Boys II, Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief, Sense8, and 2020’s Bad Boys for Life.
Or, more concisely:
Before playing Francis Fratelli, the actor appeared in many films like La Bamba, Empire of the Sun, The Fugitive, Bad Boys series, The Matrix, Memento, The Sopranos, Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief, Sense8, and Bad Boys for Life.
In 2003, he received an Emmy Award for the category of Best Supporting Actor in a Drama series, which he earned for his portrayal of the unstable character Ralph Cifaretto on the show “The Sopranos”.
In an interview with Collider Connected back in April 2020 during the pandemic, Pantoliano shared that he had been staying at home in Connecticut with his wife Nancy and three of their four children, along with their partners. He expressed that they have been busy working on landscaping projects by laying mulch, and found it to be quite enjoyable.
In the first half of my career, I graced the stage predominantly, but come the 1970s, that all changed as I transitioned into a flourishing on-screen character actress. For two decades afterward, I became a familiar face in numerous productions. One unforgettable role was Mama Fratelli from the beloved film, The Goonies; if it weren’t for those meddling kids, they would have gotten away scot-free! Another iconic part was that of Mrs. Lift, which garnered me both an Oscar and Golden Globe nomination for Best Supporting Actress in Throw Momma From the Train.
She had a distinctive raspy lisp, which was caused by the surgical removal of part of her tongue and jaw during her battle against esophageal cancer in 1984. Unfortunately, the cancer returned in 1988, leading to her death in August of that year at the age of 59. Six films were released after her demise, among them “Scrooged” and “Homer and Eddie”.
She was married to actor Logan Ramsey from 1954 until her death.
Robin Antin’s brother initially made his way into the spotlight by portraying “Jessie” in Rick Springfield’s “Jessie’s Girl” music video and later appeared in “The Last American Virgin.” Subsequently, he took on the role of Troy Perkins, a macho high school jock, in the movie “The Goonies.
In later roles, she portrayed one of Jodie Foster’s character’s assailants in “The Accused”, took on a detective role in “NYPD Blue”, and was part of the distinguished cast in the 1996 drama “It’s My Party”. This film is based on a true story about a gay architect dying of AIDS, played by Eric Roberts in the movie, who chose to host a grand farewell for his closest friends.
In 2010, Antin transitioned into writing and producing, and he penned and orchestrated the movie “Burlesque,” featuring stars like Cher and Christina Aguilera. This was a deeply cherished endeavor for him, as he expressed his affection for musical entertainment and uplifting films to the Philadelphia Gay News. He believed that the original burlesque world, with its blend of unique performances, was perfect for a musical film due to its eclectic nature – it’s a tribute drawn from the popular culture of the time.
Speaking with the Los Angeles Times, I openly admitted that my longtime partner, Clint Culpepper (then the president of Sony Screen Gems), had requested me to direct Burlesque – a film that was both my feature directorial debut and cost $55 million. However, it’s important to clarify that relationships don’t guarantee movie greenlights; the success of the project is determined by various factors. This production, marked by Cher’s first starring role since 1999’s Tea With Mussolini, ultimately grossed over $89.5 million.
In many television roles prior to “The Goonies”, the character of Jake Fratelli, portrayed by Davi, was often a rough and tough persona, even though he was a mama’s boy with a criminal background.
Davi played the role of Jake Fratelli in “The Goonies” who was a tough guy despite being a mama’s boy with a criminal past, in various TV appearances before that.
For quite some time, this seasoned actor has been consistently working in films and television series. He has graced our screens in productions like “Die Hard” and “License to Kill”, and played a leading role in the crime drama “Profiler”, which aired on NBC from 1996 to 2000. Among his other significant roles are appearances in “Stargate: Atlantis”, “Criminal Minds”, and “The Expendables 3”.
Davi has been married three times and has five children.
Prior to “The Goonies”, Donner had previously directed a small horror movie titled “The Omen” and something else featuring Christopher Reeve in a cape, known as “Superman”. Working with him and producer Steven Spielberg meant that the wide-eyed wonder portrayed by the Goonies throughout the film felt genuine.
In the 1960s, Donner honed his directing skills on television shows like The Rifleman, The Man From U.N.C.L.E., and The Twilight Zone. He later took on directing roles for all four Lethal Weapon films featuring Mel Gibson and Danny Glover, as well as movies starring Mel Gibson such as Maverick and Conspiracy Theory. His latest directorial work was the 2006 action drama 16 Blocks, which starred Bruce Willis.
The movies that credit him as a producer include the “Free Willy” trilogy, “Any Given Sunday,” “X-Men,” and “X-Men Origins: Wolverine.” He was married to his wife Lauren from 1986 until his passing in July 2021 at the age of 91.
