As an analyst, I’m excited to share that on May 22, 2025, I had the pleasure of witnessing a tantalizing teaser trailer for an upcoming Xbox game titled Alkahest, which also plans to release on PC. This engaging RPG is a brainchild of Push On and will be published by HypeTrain Digital. The game is set in a grim, medieval fantasy landscape where the player takes on the role of a warrior, armed with a variety of weapons and potent alchemical concoctions to vanquish legions of ferocious creatures.
The teaser trailer from IGN offers a sneak peek at the style of battles we can expect in Aklahest, and to be honest, it appears incredibly intense and exciting!
In these trailers, we get a glimpse of the main character using the surroundings creatively, engaging in agile sword fights, and even brewing lethal concoctions amidst battle, all with the intention of vanquishing their enemies.
In terms of the plot, the story unfolds in the turbulent realm of Kadanor, where a devastating civil war rages among three dominant noble families. The narrative follows a young man, who happens to be the least significant son of a minor noble, seemingly destined for anonymity.
Instead of submitting to your destiny, you set out on a journey throughout the realm to establish a reputation by uncovering hidden treasures, fulfilling tasks for villagers, and addressing an unexpected surge of goblin attacks near the county border.
On the game’s Steam page, the creators mention that the fight system in Alkahest is designed to include intricate melee combinations and a significant emphasis on engaging with the surrounding environment. This can involve chopping down trees or utilizing neighboring siege tools to defeat opponents.
Furthermore, a significant aspect of Alkahest’s gameplay will involve Alchemy. During their journeys, players can discover various recipes and use them to craft a variety of alchemical items such as flaming grenades, healing concoctions, and oil for weapons. There’s also the option to secretly place poison in an NPC’s belongings for covert elimination.
Will Alkahest’s gameplay at launch live up to the hype of these trailers?
It’s intriguing to note that, as per the developers, Alkahest seems to be influenced by games such as Kingdom Come: Deliverance and Dishonored. Although I haven’t experienced Kingdom Come: Deliverance, I have played Dishonored, and there appears to be a resemblance in melee combat between these two games in Alkahest.
Beyond that, the battle scenes appear incredibly impressive, but they might be overly impressive. Keep in mind, these trailers could be pre-recorded cinematics, and the actual game might have a completely different look.
In a similar vein, comments echoed about the combat trailers for Black Myth: Wukong during its initial reveal. However, it’s worth noting that the final product exceeded expectations (despite some level design issues we pointed out in our review of Black Myth: Wukong).
As an excited fan, I can’t help but wonder if Alkahest’s combat system will be as thrilling to experience as it appears in the trailers. Only time will tell when Alkahest finally drops on Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, and PC through Windows and Steam.
