As someone who has spent countless hours dissecting my own devices to achieve that coveted transparent look, I must say, Microsoft’s latest Sky Cipher Special Edition controller is music to my eyes! I’ve been longing for this translucent beauty ever since it was announced, and the fact that it’s now available for $49.99 is a dream come true… if only I weren’t in the UK. Sigh!
The new Xbox controller harks back to an era when transparent gaming equipment was popular, and let’s be honest, has that trend ever truly waned? I’ve been eagerly awaiting the release of Sky Cipher Special Edition, but I’ve been patiently waiting for it to go on sale. To my surprise, it happened sooner than expected! Thanks to a promotional offer, you can now purchase Sky Cipher in its stunning blue version from Lenovo for only $49.99, that’s a reduction of $25. Unfortunately, I can’t enjoy this deal as I’m based in the UK. There are several other controllers available in the promotion, so check out the details below to see the color options.
Transparent gaming accessories are just cool, I don’t make the rules.
I’ve meticulously disassembled certain devices of mine, like switching my original Series S controller from Atomic Purple to an attempt at a shell swap on a Steam Deck (although that didn’t go as planned). Fortunately, Xbox is shielding my accessories from any more harm by releasing transparent versions, with the Sky Cipher being the initial release in what I hope will be a variety of colors (I’m particularly keen on green). We haven’t seen clear controllers from Xbox since the elegant Phantom range that debuted with the previous generation.
As a researcher studying gaming equipment, I’ve found that Xbox controllers are incredibly versatile. They can wirelessly connect to the Xbox without any complications, and with Bluetooth, they’re compatible with numerous other devices. Personally, I use my Xbox controller for both my console and Steam Deck in docked mode, and it performs exceptionally well. With standard AA batteries, you can enjoy around 40 hours of gameplay, or you could opt for an Xbox controller charger instead. It’s not just my opinion—Valve has shared some intriguing statistics about controller usage among Steam players, and Xbox controllers are the most preferred choice. In fact, 59% of controller-using Steam gamers opt for Xbox controllers, compared to only 26% who choose PlayStation ones.
