There’s a buzz suggesting that Thor 5 might be in the works, but without a familiar face from the franchise. So far, there’s no official confirmation about a fifth Thor film, but hints have been dropped. The man behind the hammer, Chris Hemsworth, has expressed his readiness for more adventures, as he’s already committed to appear in Avengers: Doomsday and has hinted that he’d be up for more roles, provided he doesn’t need to bulk up like he did for previous Thor films.
Love and Thunder, leaving the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s plans for the God of Thunder uncertain moving forward.
It has been disclosed by a reliable source, MyTimeToShineHello, on their account under the name person X, that Marvel Studios is planning a fifth Thor movie. However, Taika Waititi will not be returning for this project; instead, Chris Hemsworth is advocating for action director Sam Hargrave to take up the task.
Following my post, a source contacted me with some exciting news! It seems that the story of “Secret Wars” won’t be Chris Hemsworth’s final chapter. Instead, they are planning on creating “Thor 5,” and this time, Taika Waititi will not be the director. Hemsworth is keen for Sam Hargrave, known for his work on “Extraction,” to take over the helm instead.
Chris Hemsworth has collaborated with director Hargrave on the Netflix movie franchise titled “Extraction”. This series consists of two films that have been released so far, a television spin-off under development, and a third installment that’s already been given the go-ahead.
Apart from the current project, the filmmaker boasts a history with Disney. Previously, they served as a stunt coordinator in numerous Marvel Cinematic Universe films such as “Captain America: Civil War,” “Avengers: Infinity War,” and “Avengers: Endgame.” Additionally, they held the position of second unit director during Season 2 of “The Mandalorian.
In 2026’s movie “Avengers: Doomsday,” directed by The Russo Brothers, we can expect to see Chris Hemsworth reprising his role as Thor. In this film, Thor may take on a more senior role within the superhero team, joining forces with Anthony Mackie, Tom Hiddleston, and Sebastian Stan, among others. Given his long-standing tenure in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), Hemsworth is one of the longest-serving actors in this franchise.
Despite hinting at a possible sequel for Thor, Marvel Studios has yet to confirm any plans for Thor 5, given that they introduced the charming character Love as Thor’s new companion in Thor: Love and Thunder, along with Brett Goldstein’s portrayal of Hercules.
Why Moving On From Taika Waititi Makes Sense For Thor
Should these whispers turn out to be valid, and it’s confirmed that Thor 5 moves forward without Taika Waititi at the director’s chair, it might just work out in favor of the Thor series spearheaded by Chris Hemsworth. As a diehard cinema enthusiast, I can’t help but feel a tinge of apprehension, but the potential for fresh perspectives and storylines is undeniably enticing.
As a passionate cinephile, I can’t help but express my admiration for Taika Waititi’s transformative impact on the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). His directorial magic breathed new life into Thor, reinventing the God of Thunder within the superhero realm. This fresh take offered a distinct identity that set him apart among his fellow Marvel Studios characters, a necessity after the misstep of Thor: The Dark World, in my opinion.
Despite Waititi taking over the Thor franchise about a decade ago, the subseries now appears to be in a position akin to where it was prior to Ragnarok. The latest film, Thor: Love and Thunder, has not achieved the critical acclaim of Waititi’s first movie, making it the lowest-rated film in the entire Thor series.
With 14 years of experience under his belt, it’s understandable that Hemsworth or Marvel might want to explore new directions for the Thor franchise following “Love and Thunder”.
Following the premiere of “Love and Thunder,” Hemsworth expressed a desire to depart from Waititi’s portrayal of his character. He hinted that future Thor films might undergo a transformation, aiming to keep fans engaged and himself invested by offering something fresh and exciting.
In comparing “Thor 1” and “2,” as well as “Ragnarok” and “Love and Thunder,” you may notice they share some similarities. However, it seems the creators are aiming to give these movies a fresh twist. With “Infinity War” and “Endgame,” I was granted an exceptional chance to make significant changes with the character, which I find exciting. It keeps both me and the audience engaged. If things become too predictable, there’s a risk of becoming complacent because I’m familiar with the process. So, I’m not sure what the future holds.
Taika Waititi himself has expressed thoughts about potentially moving away from Thor, stating back in June 2022 that “each time I work on a movie, I think to myself, ‘I’ll never do this again…'”.
The idea of creating a new trilogy hasn’t crossed my mind, as after making each film, I often think, “I won’t do this again,” finding the process too challenging. However, I’ve completed eight films so far, each time declaring that I might retire, only to be enticed back by financial incentives and the allure of awards. I’m drawn in like a dog following cookie crumbs… and the promise of Oscars.
If the franchise decides to part ways with Waititi, Sam Hargrave might be a fitting choice. Hargrave shares a past connection with the film’s leading actor and the studio, and he could offer a distinctive action-oriented perspective for the character, one that would differ significantly from previous portrayals.
