The Marvel Cinematic Universe’s (MCU) Thor series has finally ended its string of disappointments following the conclusion of Phase 5. Australian actor Chris Hemsworth started his portrayal of Thor in a 2011 standalone film, and since then, he has been seen in three subsequent films and four Avengers epic movies. Alongside the Avengers, Captain America, and Spider-Man, Thor is one of the few MCU sub-series with four movies. Most recently, the Asgardian deity appeared in Thor: Love and Thunder in 2022 as part of Phase 4. This film, however, was a financial success but received harsh criticism from critics.
Marvel Studios is wrapping up Phase 5 this summer, with “Thunderbolts” hitting cinemas in May and “Ironheart” debuting on Disney+ in June as the final series. As we transition to Phase 6 starting with “The Fantastic Four: First Steps,” it’s worth noting that this phase will mark the first time a Thor film is absent from the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).
- Phase 1 – Thor
- Phase 2 – Thor: The Dark World
- Phase 3 – Thor: Ragnaork
- Phase 4 – Thor: Love and Thunder
Although Thor didn’t star in a Phase 5 solo film, he made a surprising guest appearance through Chris Hemsworth’s cameo in “Deadpool & Wolverine“. This unexpected scene left viewers puzzled about why the thunder god was shedding tears over an injured Deadpool. Fans are eagerly waiting for more insights into this mystery in future Avengers films.
Although the Asgardian series took a break following the release of “Love & Thunder”, there’s been plenty of chatter suggesting that Marvel Studios might produce “Thor 5” at a future date (further details to come).
In the second season of his Disney+ show, Phase 5 made contact with Loki, Thor’s brother. This interaction could potentially pave the way for their meeting again in a future Avengers film during Phase 6.
As a passionate supporter, I might rephrase it like this: Among all Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) sub-franchises, none has released a movie in every phase, but the case for Captain America comes very close. While Phase 4 was the only phase lacking a Captain America blockbuster film, “The Falcon and The Winter Soldier” on Disney+ served as an extension of sorts, essentially delivering a Captain America series instead.
- Phase 1 – Captain America: The First Avenger
- Phase 2 – Captain America: The Winter Soldier
- Phase 3 – Captain America: Civil War
- Phase 4 – The Falcon and the Winter Soldier
- Phase 5 – Captain America: Brave New World
Will Thor 5 Actually Happen?
The possibility of a Thor 5 remains uncertain following the less-than-favorable critical reception of Love & Thunder. However, despite its lower ratings, the movie managed to generate an impressive $760.9 million globally, significantly increasing the likelihood that Disney and Marvel Studios will pursue a sequel.
It’s been whispered around for a while now that Thor 5 might become a reality, and it seems Marvel Studios is seriously considering it. A recent speculation suggests that this upcoming installment could take place without Taika Waititi, who directed Thor: Love & Thunder. Chris Hemsworth reportedly wants Sam Hargrave, director of Extraction, to step into the role as the main director for the project.
Indeed, the idea that Thor might meet his end in either “Avengers: Doomsday” or “Secret Wars” has sparked debate recently. However, it’s uncertain if the upcoming Marvel Studios film scheduled for July 23, 2027, will be “Thor 5,” as there’s no indication that it’s set to serve as a final solo adventure for Thor before his potential death in “Avengers 6.
Despite the possibility that Chris Hemsworth’s Avenger character might meet his end in either “Doomsday” or “Secret Wars”, there’s a chance that “Thor 5” could materialize in Phase 7, presenting an untold story from Thor’s past. Just as Black Widow made her appearance in Phase 4 following Scarlett Johansson’s character’s demise in “Endgame”.
Indeed, “Love & Thunder” might pave the way for such a scenario, as hinted by its post-credit sequence where Natalie Portman’s character Jane Foster is welcomed at the gates of Valhalla by Idris Elba’s character Heimdall after she lost her battle with cancer.
In the aftermath of Thor’s demise in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, a film titled “Thor 5” could be an ideal homage to his legacy. Set within Valhalla, this movie would offer a profound exploration of Thor’s 1500-year life journey. It might also resurrect deceased characters like Jane Foster, Heimdall, Loki, Odin, Frigga, and the Warriors Three, allowing for their stories to continue.
