Thor, Loki, or Deadpool? Who Dies in Avengers: Doomsday?

In “Avengers: Doomsday,” the formidable foe Doctor Doom, portrayed by Robert Downey Jr., will present the Avengers with their most daunting challenge yet. Given the uncertainty about the team’s composition at this stage, Doctor Doom might cause significant damage once he enters the Sacred Timeline. Consequently, it seems unlikely that all members will make it through the upcoming crossover, directed by the Russo Brothers. During a recent livestream, several characters from “Avengers: Doomsday” were unveiled. Many heroes from the roster could meet their end in “Doomsday,” leaving fans to mourn their loss during the events of “Avengers: Secret Wars.

In “Avengers: Secret Wars,” the Avengers might require a significant catalyst to fuel their determination to battle again. The demise of Phil Coulson at Loki’s hands in the initial “Avengers” movie served as the impetus for the team to vanquish the Asgardian villain in New York. A substantial death occurring in “Secret Wars” could potentially serve as the spark that ignites the new team’s resolve to safeguard the Multiverse. Doctor Doom is not one to yield easily, and not every character who has made an appearance on the big screen so far is fully prepared to confront such a formidable adversary.

A Shocking Demise

To maximize audience investment in the Avengers’ mission to defeat Doctor Doom in “Avengers: Doomsday”, a dramatic twist such as killing off a beloved character like Thor, portrayed by Chris Hemsworth, could be effective. This character has been a mainstay since the beginning of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and has been played by Hemsworth for nearly two decades. Given his long-standing contribution to the franchise, it might be fitting for him to depart after so many years of entertaining fans. The “Secret Wars” comics offer a basis for replacing Thor with a whole team of Thor Corps who are loyal to Doom. This change could also provide an opportunity for Hemsworth to reunite with Natalie Portman’s Jane Foster and Idris Elba’s Heimdall in Valhalla, where they might rally forces for “Avengers: Secret Wars”.

Discussing significant Asgardian characters potentially meeting their end in Avengers: Doomsday, it’s worth mentioning that Tom Hiddleston will return as Loki, the Trickster God, in the upcoming film. Known for his antics during Phase Four, Loki has been a standout star. Over two seasons of the Loki series on television, Hiddleston’s portrayal of the character demonstrated that there was still hope for him to choose the right path. The final episode of the series saw Loki assuming the role of guardian of time. Given that Doctor Doom might alter the Multiverse, wouldn’t Loki be at the forefront of defending against this threat? However, this could spell trouble for Odin’s least favored child, Anthony Hopkins’ character.

The New Generation of Heroes

Following the premiere of “Avengers: Endgame”, the Marvel Cinematic Universe has brought forth fresh heroes both on the big screen and small. These newcomers are expected to uphold the tradition established by the initial Avengers squad over a span of ten years, but suppose they perish in their confrontation with Doctor Doom? It’s been confirmed that many members from the Thunderbolts* will reappear in “Avengers: Doomsday”. Julia Louis-Dreyfus portrays Valentina Allegra de Fontaine, a team of lesser-known heroes not typically renowned for their immense power within the franchise. Given an adversary as formidable as Doctor Doom, it’s plausible that he could effortlessly vanquish characters such as Red Guardian (David Harbour), Yelena Belova (Florence Pugh), or any character who lacks the strength to demolish a building with their bare hands.

*Thunderbolts: A fictional superhero team in the Marvel Comics universe, consisting of former villains and second-string heroes who pose as a new team of heroes.

Following the debut of The Thunderbolts on their own film, audiences will have the opportunity to encounter Marvel’s Original Family in “The Fantastic Four: First Footsteps“. In this narrative, Pedro Pascal and Vanessa Kirby will portray key characters in a tale set within an alternate reality. There is speculation that Marvel Studios may surprise viewers of Avengers: Doomsday by eliminating one of the team members. Given their upcoming introduction this summer, fans anticipate that The Fantastic Four will be part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe for some time. Removing a hero who was anticipated to appear in numerous sequels could send ripples through devoted followers, particularly if it’s Pedro Pascal’s portrayal of Reed Richards.

The advanced nation of Wakanda might face significant trouble, as characters like Princess Shuri (Letitia Wright) and M’Baku (Winston Duke) could be key targets for Doom to eliminate. Similarly, Namor, the ruler of an underwater kingdom, may side with Wakanda for mutual survival. The history between Doom and Namor from the comics suggests a potential spectacular battle on screen, perhaps even over the affections of Sue Storm (a woman).

New Avengers: Endgame

When it was revealed who would be starring in “Avengers: Doomsday,” it was hard not to notice that Brie Larson and Benedict Cumberbatch were absent from the live stream. Since Captain Marvel and Doctor Strange are among the most powerful characters in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and they’re key figures left over from the Infinity Saga, there’s speculation about their possible involvement in “Avengers: Secret Wars.” However, given that the heroes of “Doomsday” won’t rely on them for assistance, it seems less powerful characters like Shang-Chi (Simu Liu) could be in serious trouble.

The stage is now prepared for the Avengers to confront their most formidable adversary yet, and this time, no one is invulnerable. Although it was pleasant to observe the emerging heroes of Phase 4-6 finding their places, don’t expect these ‘New Avengers’ to emerge unscathed from Doomsday. After all, it’s the original Avengers who are returning for Secret Wars, and that’s because they are needed.

Avengers: Doomsday has a release date of May 1, 2026.
