In May, Marvel Comics has declared that the character Thor Odinson will face his demise in issue #23 of Immortal Thor, initiating a three-part story arc titled “Godwar.” This narrative will be penned by writer Al Ewing and illustrated by artist Jan Bazaldua. The story revolves around Thor’s final stand against Kemur, a formidable mythical creature embodying violence itself. This event could represent one of the most significant deaths for Marvel‘s Thunder God in their publishing history. Interestingly, Marvel has stated that this incident will lead to a daring transformation in Ewing’s ongoing work on the title rather than its conclusion. The phrasing indicates that though Thor’s death seems imminent, the series may continue, possibly delving into Thor’s journey through the Norse afterlife of Valhalla or focusing on his son Magni taking up the thunder god mantle.
This announcement signifies a significant turning point in Ewing’s celebrated stint on “Immortal Thor.” Over the past couple of years, it has been carefully setting up this critical juncture using prophecies and signs foretelling Thor’s demise. The comic book series stands out by delving into Norse mythology extensively while broadening Marvel’s cosmic deity universe, introducing entities such as the Utgard-Gods – older, more formidable variations of the Asgardian gods that Thor has been fighting since its inception.
The narrative has primarily explored Thor’s increasing understanding of his mortality despite being a god, at the same time broadening the roster of characters who might inherit his mantle. This is achieved by introducing different iterations of Thor and resurrecting his son Magni from another timeline, thus offering several plausible paths for the storyline once the Thunder God is foretold to perish.
Death Is Not The End for Marvel’s Thunder God
In the comic book series “Immortal Thor,” Thor’s approaching death continues a long line of impactful demises for the character within Marvel Comics. Within the main Marvel Universe, Thor has experienced numerous deaths. For instance, during the “Fear Itself” storyline, he perished while vanquishing the World Serpent Jörmungandr, but was revived from death by Loki and the Silver Surfer. In “Thor: Disassembled,” he opted to die by destroying the world tree Yggdrasil to prevent cosmic destruction during Ragnarök, with the Asgardians reappearing on Earth following the catastrophic event. More recently, in “King Thor,” an aged version of the god of thunder sacrificed himself to halt universal decay, passing his mantle to his granddaughters. Each of these deaths has added depth to Thor’s mythos and underscored his status as one of Marvel’s most selfless heroes.
Although fans may be eager for more adventures of Thor in the comic books, his future in the Marvel Cinematic Universe is still uncertain. The latest portrayal of Thor by Chris Hemsworth in 2022’s “Thor: Love and Thunder” received a variety of opinions, with the movie receiving a “B+” from audiences, which is the lowest score for any Thor film according to CinemaScore. This mixed reaction, along with the movie’s global box office earnings of $760.9 million falling below those of its predecessor “Thor: Ragnarok”, seems to have caused Marvel Studios to be cautious about producing a fifth Thor movie.
Chris Hemsworth himself has acknowledged the divided reaction, pointing out that the movie might have gone too far with its silliness, and he felt it made him seem like a caricature of himself. Although the actor is open to reprising the role, he’s emphasized that any future portrayal needs to take the character down an entirely new path. Perhaps, Marvel Studios could find a fitting end for their God of Thunder in the MCU by drawing inspiration from Thor’s death in the comics and giving him a grand farewell instead of leaving his story untouched after Love and Thunder.
Immortal Thor #23 arrives in comic shops on May 14, 2025, with covers by Alex Ross.
