The character of Everlasting Thor has been quite the thrilling adventure. Similar to Al Ewing’s series, The Immortal Hulk, Everlasting Thor delves into Thor’s past and his connection to mythology, crafting a Thor tale that is uniquely distinct. In Everlasting Thor, Thor encounters the menace of Utgard, which gradually propels him towards his demise. Since confronting the Utgardian Thor named Toranos, Thor has faced challenges in unprecedented ways, clashing with both familiar and new adversaries while unearthing secrets from his lengthy existence. This journey has led him to Utgard, a trip marked by alliances forged with former enemies and battles against the harbinger of his own mortality. All these events culminate in Everlasting Thor #22, where Thor, Skurge, and Hermod, Thor’s sibling, become ensnared within the living city Nrgl, a labyrinth without end that also houses Heimdall. However, even in Utgard, Thor is not bereft of resources, acquiring new weapons throughout his Everlasting Thor journey.
The indomitable Thor, unlike any other instance in his extensive existence, has been put to the ultimate test, leaving the God of Thunder in a state where he now requires greater power than previously. Known for wielding Mjolnir and harnessing its formidable energy as an enhancement to his divine storm powers, Thor has recently taken up additional weapons. Although these new tools aren’t as powerful as Mjolnir, they are still highly potent – Tormod the axe and Yolgjord, a magical belt.
Thor’s New Weapons Have Helped Him in Ways He Never Dreamed
In the Marvel Universe, Mjolnir stands as one of the most potent weapons. Beyond enabling Thor to traverse the skies and utilize his divine energies more effectively, it boosts his strength and resilience, and grants him access to diverse energy types that are incredibly destructive. Regrettably, these powers failed to save Thor from Toranos, compelling him to flee alongside Loki across the Ten Realms. In the novel “Immortal Thor”, Loki occupies an intriguing position; they’ve aided Thor frequently, but there’s a sense of them biding their time like a hidden predator. However, Loki wished for Thor to vanquish Toranos, partly because Loki now serves as the God of Stories, and Thor’s demise is a significant narrative element, which helped him fashion a weapon from his old helmet, along with a touch of enchantment – Tormod. This ax resembles Mjolnir in size, boasting both an ax and hammer head. It serves as another conduit for Thor to release his lightning through, further enhancing his might with his inherent storm powers.
Tormod played a crucial role in the conquest of Toranos and has proven useful on multiple occasions, leading us to introduce Thor’s latest weapon – the Yolgjord belt. The Yolgjord is a result of another challenge posed by Loki to Thor, possessing protective and enhancing properties. In his dealings with Hercules and the Greek pantheon, Thor confronted Nyx, the night goddess, and her offspring. He then journeyed to the Sunless Realm where he encountered Zeus. Upon finding him, Zeus imbued the Yolgjord with his power, forging a belt that shields Thor from attacks, magic, and even prevents the Grey Gargoyle from turning him into stone. Although less active than Tormod or Mjolnir, the Yolgjord plays a significant part in Thor’s safety, making him an even greater force to reckon with.
Thor’s Latest Challenge Is Greater Than the Power of His Weapons
In issue #22 of the Immortal Thor series, I found myself joining Thor and Skurge on their bewildering journey within the living city of Nrgl. This god-turned-maze was designed to ensnare anyone who dared enter it, manipulating both time and space to keep us trapped. The creators introduced an intriguing game mechanic, making readers flip a coin at the end of each page to either progress or rewind the story – reflecting Nrgl’s capricious control over our progression.
Throughout the issue, we witnessed Thor and Skurge battling various foes, yet their extraordinary martial skills seemed powerless in helping us escape the labyrinth any sooner. At one point, Thor confided to Skurge that all his new weapons and powers would not make braving Nrgl any less challenging for us. I couldn’t help but feel a sense of frustration and excitement as I navigated the story with each coin toss!
The indestructible Thor has equipped himself with fresh weapons and abilities, aiming to endure whatever challenges await him from the inhabitants of Utgard. Although these enhancements have been beneficial in numerous recent conflicts, his journey through Nrgl presents an unprecedented challenge. Thor’s new weapons are useful, but they can’t offer protection against being trapped within a god that manipulates internal events.
Immortal Thor #22 is on sale now.
