Based on when you’re reading this, “Throne & Liberty” is now available for early access pack owners and, as I write this, a global release is imminent, only a few days away. Given this context, there are numerous adjustable settings that will significantly impact your gaming experience. If you have concerns about your computer meeting the game’s requirements, don’t worry, we have solutions for you! Here are some settings you can modify to enhance your gaming experience.
Important Settings to Change & FPS Optimization
As we begin, it’s important to note that many aspects of the settings here are influenced by individual taste or may not apply universally across all setups. To ensure maximum flexibility, we’ll strive to maintain a broad approach and offer you various suggestions that you can tailor to your preferences.
Let’s begin with discussing gameplay aspects initially, then transition to framerate enhancements. Remember, certain gameplay configurations might affect your frames per second (FPS), and we’ll highlight those when relevant.
Gameplay Settings – Controls
Quick Skill Targeting / Casting
Within the “Gameplay” segment of the “Settings Menu,” navigate towards the “Controls” subcategory. Keep scrolling until you stumble upon the option titled “Easy Direction/Location Designated Skills“. By default, this setting is switched off; however, you might find it beneficial to toggle it on for a smoother gaming experience.
In this game setup, I can instantly launch any skill from my hotbar that requires a specific target. Typically, when I press an ability key, I’d first see a pop-up showing the skill’s range or area of effect, then I’d need to click on the precise location where I want to cast it. But with this setting, I can skip that step and just focus on choosing the right ability for the moment.
With the feature activated, you can press and hold a button to see the range or effect area of an ability, then release to use it. This is more efficient, but for beginners who are still learning the reach of their abilities, it might be best to leave it inactive until they’re more familiar with it.
Still Under “Controls” – Automatic Amitoi Healing
As you navigate to the lower end of the ‘Gameplay’ settings menu, you’ll discover the “Amitoi Recovery” feature as well. In essence, these can be thought of as ‘companions’ that autonomously restore your health, and perform additional tasks for you.
In this case, you should adjust the “Health Level at Which Amitoi Recovery Begins” to full or 100%. This setting guarantees that your Amitoi will make an effort to restore your health to its maximum level whenever possible, rather than waiting for your health to drop to a specific point first.
Furthermore, ensure that it’s consistently enabled during Player versus Player (PVP) encounters too. If it’s not activated by default, don’t forget to tick the relevant box for peace of mind!
Gameplay Settings – Character
Damage Floaters
In the “Character” section, many settings can be tailored according to your personal preference. However, it’s worth noting that certain options might be something you’d like to consider more carefully:
- Display Damage Floater Effect
- Maximize Damage Floater
If you’re considering engaging in intense multiplayer combat (large-scale PVP) or if you’re aiming for maximum frame rate performance from your system, it could be beneficial to turn off these options.
This action significantly decreases the visibility of the damage figures above your targets for each instance of damage inflicted. On systems where this feature is enabled, you may observe a substantial improvement in the game’s performance as you attack multiple enemies concurrently.
Show Character Names & Amitois
You’ll discover the character name settings located under the damage floater options. These settings are completely customizable according to your personal preferences. For instance, I prefer having both the name and health displayed for each player, including allies.
As a fellow enthusiast, if you find the display overly cluttered with that particular setting activated, you might consider disabling the options found under “User-friendly Player Characters>”. Remember, it’s all about your personal taste. If you’re role-playing as a healer or tank, you’ll definitely want to keep an eye on your character’s health, so ensuring that it’s visible is essential.
At the very end of this subcategory, you’ll come across additional settings related to Amitoi. If you’re finding it hard to keep a high FPS, particularly when there are many players present, consider disabling “Display Others’ Amitoi”. This can help declutter the screen and will also slightly boost your framerate in crowded areas. You’re welcome to hide your own Amitoi too if you prefer.
Gameplay Settings – Target Selection
In the following subcategory, we focus on “Target Selection.” Here, it’s crucial to pay attention to the “Target Selection Method” and the “Auto-Target during Attack” settings. You’ll particularly want to customize these options for Player versus Player (PVP) scenarios.
As a gamer, when I’m delving into some good old PVE action, I prefer to stick with the default “Circular Search by Distance” setting. However, when it comes to stepping into the arena for some intense PVP, I switch things up and go for the “Search by Order of Priority”. Then, I make sure to check only these specific options:
- Priority 1: Attacking Players
- Priority 3: Hostile Guild
- Priority 4: Feud Players
- Priority 5: Hostile Players
By implementing this feature, your character will avoid attacking monsters unintentionally when they’re within reach. This will prove useful in specific zones, as there might be PVE objectives interspersed among PVP territories.
From now on, for each subsequent subcategory, we won’t be able to provide any more specific advice because those areas are entirely subjective and won’t impact your framerate in any way. Instead, you might want to explore the Camera subcategory and adjust settings according to your preference.
Graphics Settings – Screen & Quality
Given that the optimal graphics settings can significantly vary based on your hardware, the subsequent content in this section aims to offer useful tips that could potentially enhance your computer’s performance and render a few additional frames.
To begin with, if you’re encountering significant performance problems while sustaining a high frame rate on a monitor of 2K or greater, consider scaling down your screen resolution to 1920 x 1080. This is quite an aggressive adjustment that may reduce quality but should ensure smoother gameplay or visuals.
Quality Settings
In the ‘Quality’ section, you’ll discover various graphic settings tailored for the game. While many aspects are subjective and come down to individual taste, I recommend turning off the Motion Blur feature as a minimum adjustment.
Instead of focusing on aspects that may not significantly affect your Frames Per Second (FPS), you might want to set all adjustable options to low or medium, particularly settings like Volumetric Clouds/Fog, Shadows/Shading-related options, and Hair Strands, as they are known to have a significant impact on FPS. Keep in mind that Hair Strands should always be turned off for optimal performance.
In my view, there are several adjustable settings that you can comfortably minimize without significantly impacting the gameplay experience. These include visual aspects like Vegetation Detail and Anti-Aliasing. These options should ideally be set to their lowest levels unless you’re specifically capturing screenshots, in which case higher settings would yield better image quality.
In summary, ensure that “Optimize Large-Scale Combat” remains enabled if you aspire to engage in extensive Player vs Player (PVP) battles. Such engagements can often be hectic and prone to lag, so having the game self-adjust for these situations will significantly ease your experience.
