Thunderbolts* Adds MCU Alum Scarlett Johansson in a Surprising Role

As a gamer with over two decades of Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) under my belt, I must say that Scarlett Johansson‘s return to the MCU as an executive producer for Thunderbolts* is nothing short of exhilarating! Her dedication and passion for the Black Widow character have always shone through in her performances, and it’s fantastic to see her take on a more behind-the-scenes role.

The intriguing sneak peek for Marvel’s “Thunderbolts” has been released, and it confirms Scarlett Johansson’s comeback to the Marvel Cinematic Universe in an unanticipated role. This surprise comes from the fact that Johansson is listed among the cast and crew of “Thunderbolts,” not as an actress, but as an executive producer! Given her previous role as an executive producer on Marvel’s “Black Widow” (2021), this fits well. As “Thunderbolts” brings together various MCU projects for this ensemble film, Johansson’s return as EP aligns with the continuation of key Black Widow characters’ stories in “Thunderbolts.

As Variety shared in its synopsis for Thunderbolts*:

According to Kurt Busiek’s comic book series, the movie titled “Thunderbolts*” is helmed by director Jake Schreier, with Kevin Feige taking on the role of producer. Louis D’Esposito, Brian Chapek, Jason Tamez and Scarlett Johansson serve as executive producers for this project. Eric Pearson, known for his work in “Black Widow,” “Thor: Ragnarok,” “Transformers One,” “The Fantastic Four: First Steps,” collaborates with Lee Sung Jin, creator of “Beef,” and Joanna Calo, co-showrunner of “The Bear,” on the screenplay.

In the year 2021, it was reported that Marvel Studios President, Kevin Feige, and actress Scarlett Johansson were joining forces to produce a project within the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

At a previous point, it was revealed that we’ve been teaming up with Scarlett on another confidential Marvel Studios project where she serves as producer. This isn’t related to Black Widow. Scarlett, an exceptionally gifted, multi-faceted, and adored actress, has been an absolute joy to work with. I must say, collaborating with her has been one of the most enriching and cherished experiences in my career. From the grueling training sessions for the hallway fight scene in Iron Man 2, to our global press tour for Avengers: Endgame, to producing Black Widow together, every step of the way has been unforgettable and immensely gratifying.

Johansson regularly answered queries about her project whenever she was on press duties. For instance, during 2023, she affirmed that her MCU project is indeed ongoing – yes, it’s still happening. However, it’s not progressing at the moment due to the WGA Strike; we’re all essentially waiting in limbo. Prior to the strike, we were actively developing the project, and now everything has slowed down a bit.

Reflecting on it now, it seems clear that Scarlett Johansson was hinting at The Thunderbolts project. Production for the film began in June 2023, but it was held up by a Writers’ Strike and then an Actors’ Strike. With the recent announcement that Johansson will serve as Executive Producer for The Thunderbolts, this might be one Marvel Cinematic Universe puzzle we can finally solve. Of course, there will be some fans disappointed that Johansson didn’t appear in the film itself.
