Since the conclusion of the Infinity Saga with “Avengers: Endgame”, the Marvel Cinematic Universe has seemed somewhat fragmented, as projects don’t seem to link cohesively, making it challenging to discern the broader narrative. It’s generally okay because we haven’t had a major team-up movie in more than five years, but with “Avengers: Doomsday” scheduled for release in May 2026, time is running out. In the interim, movies like “Captain America: New World Order” and the upcoming “The Fantastic Four: First Steps” are tasked with carrying most of the narrative weight. However, unexpectedly, “Thunderbolts*” has stepped in and recaptures that classic MCU vibe.
WARNING: Spoilers below for Thunderbolts*
The film centers around a band of misfits aiming to perform noble deeds, boasting recognizable actors that create enjoyable exchanges and references to past events. Notably, Thunderbolts incorporates a dialogue line reminiscent of several Marvel Cinematic Universe movies.
John Walker Gets His Captain America Moment in Thunderbolts*
In “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier,” we’re introduced to John Walker, a highly esteemed war veteran whom the authorities consider a suitable replacement for Steve Rogers following Sam Wilson’s decision to relinquish the shield. However, Walker finds it challenging to adapt to his new role as Captain America, battling to grasp the intricacies of the super-soldier serum and taking a life in cold blood without remorse. Eventually, the shield is taken from him by Sam and Bucky. By the series finale, Walker shows signs of regret but continues to find purpose by performing covert operations for Valentina Allegra de Fontaine, ultimately seeking to regain his sense of worth.
At Ox Group’s facility, Walker continues to exude an overbearing self-importance, assuming he’s there to apprehend Ghost and Yelena Belova. However, it doesn’t take long for him to regain his senses and understand that Valentina intends to eliminate him. He swiftly springs into action, collaborating with the rest of the group to devise a plan. Their brilliant idea is to disable the device restraining Ghost from phasing through walls, which seems straightforward. Yelena manages to locate it just in time; but before she can complete its dismantling, Walker shouts “On your left!” and obliterates it using his shield. Interestingly, the MCU’s two other Captain Americas have used this phrase on multiple occasions, including during the climactic battle at the end of Avengers: Endgame, indicating that Thunderbolts* is staying true to its roots.
Steve Rogers’s Legacy Still Looms Large in the MCU
In an effort to move beyond the Infinity Saga, the Marvel Cinematic Universe has struggled, as evidenced by its inconsistent results. The success of the Thunderbolts* lies in its characters confronting their past errors and acknowledging them. John Walker, for instance, uses his shortcomings as Captain America to mold his character, leading to the loss of his family. His opening utterance of a classic Captain America phrase underscores his lingering attachment to the past. However, through bonding with his new teammates, he begins to emerge from his shell and accept himself, flaws and all.
From my perspective, Walker’s odyssey isn’t just a solitary link to Steve Rogers within this movie. Indeed, Bucky Barnes is also part of the story, although “Thunderbolts” predominantly explores his current connections rather than delving deeply into his past, as the MCU has already done so extensively. However, it does shed light on his bond with Sam. The present-day Captain America yearns to rekindle the Avengers, yet Valentina’s New Avengers make their debut publicly first, creating a schism between him and Bucky. The post-credits scene hints at an off-screen conversation aimed at resolving this disagreement, but it seems unsuccessful, leaving Bucky contemplating surrender due to Sam now wielding the shield. This underscores the enduring influence of Steve’s legacy and how any hero who has intersected with him feels compelled to aspire to his greatness.
Thunderbolts* is in theaters now.
