Thunderbolts* Star Lewis Pullman Teases “Bob” Getting a Real Marvel Costume (Exclusive)

As a long-time Marvel fanatic with a heart full of nostalgia and a mind buzzing with comic book lore, I can hardly contain my excitement for the upcoming “Thunderbolts” movie! The secret has been hanging in the air like a humid summer day in New York City, and now that Lewis Pullman has been cast as “Bob,” it’s starting to feel more real than ever.

For quite some time now, there has been a mystery shrouding Marvel’s Thunderbolts movie, and if you count the asterisk, it seems there are two secrets hidden. The whispers about this film have consistently hinted at the appearance of Marvel’s Sentry in it, a role initially intended for Steven Yeun before his departure from the project. Now, Marvel has recruited Lewis Pullman, best known for Top Gun: Maverick and Salem’s Lot, to fill the role they’ve been referring to as “Bob” in promotional materials. Fans are convinced that Bob will eventually be unmasked as The Sentry in the MCU, and even Pullman himself has dropped a hint about this possibility.

In a chat with ComicBook during an interview about the upcoming movie “Salem’s Lot”, we asked the actor about the recently released teaser trailer for “Thunderbolts” and if his character “Bob” might swap his familiar scrubs for something more stylish, perhaps even a cape-like outfit. Pullman’s response is consistent with expectations of Marvel fans.

Pullman expressed his admiration for the trailer, mentioning that he first saw it at Comic-Con and couldn’t fully appreciate it due to the crowd, but he believes it’s excellent. He also noted that the character does manage to get out of his scrubs and change, hinting at a hopeful desire for him to wash them. Additionally, Pullman was pleased to see the character no longer in the scrubs, finding it refreshing.

It’s significant to mention that it appears inevitable for The Sentry to have a unique outfit in the upcoming Thunderbolts movie, given his character’s role. This decision aligns well with the team composition too. The Sentry possesses powers stemming from a modified Super Soldier Serum, granting him power equivalent to “a million exploding suns,” which sets him apart. However, what truly matters for The Sentry is his dual personality: he embodies the heroic side in a golden costume with a flowing cape, and wrestles with his darker self, The Void, an evil presence that resides within him which he continually fights.

At least acknowledging that Bob will receive an upgrade in terms of clothing is a step forward from the secrecy he had been maintaining about his role, as recently as this past summer. Earlier this year, when asked point-blank if he was portraying the enigmatic Marvel character, he deftly avoided the question by complimenting The Sentry’s costume and commenting on its impressive hairpiece: “What a stunning outfit. Look at those locks, my word.

The film titled “Thunderbolts” is introduced as an unconventional alliance, where the troubled assassin Yelena Belova, played by Florence Pugh, teams up with a group of Marvel Cinematic Universe characters that were once considered unlikely companions. Furthermore, this production brings back fan favorites like Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan), Red Guardian (David Harbour), John Walker (Wyatt Russell), Taskmaster (Olga Kurylenko), Ghost (Hannah John-Kamen) and Valentina Allegra de Fontaine (Julia Louis-Dreyfus). It also introduces some fresh faces to the Marvel Universe.

As a passionate movie enthusiast, I’m thrilled to share that the film “Thunderbolts” is being directed by Jake Schreier, with the legendary Kevin Feige overseeing production. The team of Louis D’Esposito, Brian Chapek, Jason Tamez, and none other than Scarlett Johansson are serving as executive producers for this exciting project. I can hardly wait to see what they have in store!

Thunderbolts* will be released exclusively in theaters on May 2, 2025.
