Thunderbolts* Trailer Includes a Sneaky Callback to Captain America: The Winter Soldier

As a gamer who has spent countless hours immersed in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, I can’t help but feel a sense of nostalgic excitement when it comes to the latest developments in the upcoming “Thunderbolts” movie. The callback to Bucky Barnes’ iconic car-destabilizing shot with his trusty gun is a delightful nod to one of my all-time favorite Marvel films, “Captain America: The Winter Soldier.

The newly unveiled preview for Marvel Studios’ Thunderbolts ended with an amusing scene that has caught fans’ attention. What seems comical on its own is also a nod to one of the most beloved films in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Towards the end of the trailer, Bucky Barnes is chasing a car carrying the rest of the Thunderbolts team. He shoots at them, causing such chaos that the back end of the vehicle collapses completely.

He’s employing the identical firearm he previously used to damage Nick Fury’s vehicle in “Captain America: The Winter Soldier”. It’s not quite an Easter egg, considering it’s just equipment that’s known to be part of his standard gear, but it’s definitely a thrilling sight to see back in use after a ten-year absence.

In this film titled Thunderbolts, a diverse group of Marvel characters who were once enemies come together. This group includes Yelena Belova (played by Florence Pugh), Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan), Ghost (Hannah John-Kamen), Taskmaster (Olga Kurylenko), Red Guardian (David Harbour) and U.S. Agent (Wyatt Russell). It appears that they have been assembled by Valentina Allegra de Fontaine (played by Julia Louis-Dreyfus). However, the teaming up doesn’t seem to go smoothly, as a gunshot in the scene suggests.

In the enticing preview, the conflicting allegiances and affections among the characters frequently erupt. It’s evident that Val, portrayed by Julia Louis-Dreyfus, not only controls (or manages) Avengers Tower at present but also appears to be assembling a team analogous to The Avengers, albeit with a sinister twist. Might this mysterious Thunderbolts asterisk hint at this ominous version of the team?

Based on the sequence of events and editing, it’s uncertain whether the ex-villains are backstabbing one another from the start, or if they engage in conflict prior to uniting as a team. At this stage, it’s difficult to predict which scenario is more probable.

It’s wise to anticipate an unexpected turn since the Thunderbolts franchise is renowned for one major twist from its debut in Thunderbolts #1. Initially appearing as a typical superhero team composed of fresh and original characters, the Thunderbolts were later exposed as a band of established villains orchestrating a complex deception in their final pages.

In his latest interview, Harbour stated that we aren’t the heroes you might think we are. We lack the capability and responsibility akin to Captain America. Our arrival isn’t always timely, as punctuality isn’t one of our top qualities.

Thunderbolts* will arrive in theaters on May 2nd.
