TikTok‘s potential ban in the U.S., initially set for January 19th, may not occur as previously expected due to a possible extension that President-Elect Donald Trump might approve. After the Supreme Court decision to uphold and enforce the long-awaited ban, it seemed inevitable. However, recent statements from Trump suggest a delay in the ban. This potential reprieve for TikTok arrives on the eve of the proposed ban and just before Trump takes office after his inauguration.
Based on Kristen Welker’s report from NBC, it is expected that President Trump might extend TikTok’s reprieve from a ban for approximately 90 days. In her interview with him the day prior to the potential ban, Welker mentioned that Trump had not yet made up his mind regarding this issue. If he decides to grant an extension, it appears that an official announcement could be made on Monday.
He said to Welker, ‘I believe it’s worth considering that as an option.’ He also mentioned that extending the deadline for 90 days seems highly probable due to its appropriateness in this significant circumstance. However, we must examine it thoroughly.
As a dedicated user, I’ve found myself caught up in the continuous chatter about whether TikTok should be prohibited. The crux of this debate lies in its connections to China, which has raised privacy questions given its widespread appeal. On a governmental level, discussions about banning TikTok have been a recurring theme during President Joe Biden’s term, but they truly gained momentum back in 2020, during Trump’s initial term in office.

Biden indicated that it’s something Trump would need to handle once he assumes office regarding the ban. ByteDance then replied by saying if no decision is made, TikTok might stop functioning on Sunday. If Trump doesn’t act until Monday, there could be a potential one-day outage for TikTok.
If the Biden Administration doesn’t swiftly issue a clear declaration exempting TikTok from enforcement actions, regrettably, TikTok may need to shut down on January 19. This was the message conveyed by TikTok.
