TikTok‘s time in the United States may be up.
The social media platform has announced that it will close in the U.S. on January 19, unless the Supreme Court can either overturn or postpone the enforcement of a law that requires ByteDance, the Chinese-owned parent company, to sell the app to an American buyer. This is as reported by the Associated Press.
Previously, President Joe Biden approved a bill that mandates the removal of TikTok from American app marketplaces and prevents all internet service providers within the country from granting access to the platform if ByteDance fails to sell it to a U.S. corporation before January 19th.
The law was established due to worries about China potentially using TikTok for spying on American citizens.
Following this action, TikTok requested an urgent court order (an injunction) to halt the implementation of the ban, claiming in legal documents obtained by TopMob News that it infringes on First Amendment rights and could lead to significant financial losses.
On January 10th, the Supreme Court will listen to oral discussions about whether the existing law should be maintained.
During this period, multiple businesspeople have made attempts to buy TikTok, among them being Kevin O’Leary from the TV show “Shark Tank.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter) on January 6th, I expressed my thoughts, stating this acquisition isn’t merely about purchasing TikTok’s U.S. assets. It’s about safeguarding the privacy of an astounding 170 million American users, a responsibility that goes beyond the transaction itself.
O’Leary went on to say, “Our goal is to strengthen creators and small businesses, and we aim to create a platform that values people above all else, rather than algorithms. TikTok holds great promise, not only as a creative outlet for individuals but also as a catalyst for significant economic and social change.
Instead, O’Leary indicated that it’s probable he’ll require support from the incoming President, Donald Trump, who is scheduled to take office on January 20th.
He stated during a January 6 interview on Fox News’ show “The Story with Martha MacCallum,” according to The Wrap, that Trump is the person we will be working with in the coming months to finalize the deal. Therefore, I wanted to inform him, as well as other members of his administration, that we are proceeding and will require their assistance.
But for what it’s worth, ByteDance has previously said that TikTok is not for sale.
ByteDance declared in an April statement (originally in Chinese and later translated) via its own platform Toutiao that they have no intention of selling TikTok. They further clarified that the rumors circulating about a potential sale are false.
