Tim Burton Shares How Wednesday Helped Him After Dumbo

Tim Burton Shares How Wednesday Helped Him After Dumbo

As a lifelong fan of Tim Burton‘s darkly whimsical worlds, I must say that his recent journey has been as captivating as any of his films. The creative maverick himself admits that the production of Dumbo left him feeling like a lost circus elephant, but the success of Wednesday and the impending release of Beetlejuice have rekindled his spark.

According to Tim Burton, the Netflix series “Wednesday” served as a creative revival for him following his work on the movie “Dumbo.” Prior to discussing “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice,” Variety asked Burton about how he managed to bounce back after the Disney film didn’t perform well at the box office. Burton explained that the TV show provided a much-needed lift for him, as it helped him emerge from a creative slump following his involvement with that project. “Dumbo” didn’t achieve the same level of success as other Disney live-action remakes, which left some doubts about Burton’s future prospects. However, with “Wednesday” and “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” set to reignite fan excitement, things are looking a lot more promising now.

“To tell you the truth, after making ‘Dumbo’, I wasn’t sure what was next. I thought maybe I could retire or try something different. But this project rekindled my passion. In Hollywood, it’s easy to get caught up in being responsible for budgets and such, which can sometimes make you lose sight of yourself. This experience reminded me that doing what I truly want is essential, as it benefits everyone involved.” (Burton laughed.)

Burton Gets Real About Dumbo

As a die-hard fan, I can say that Tim Burton found the production of Dumbo quite challenging for him personally. Despite this, he remains adored by fans worldwide. His triumphs with Wednesday and the buzz surrounding Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice demonstrate that he’s still got a lot of goodwill going for him. Yet, the experience on Dumbo made Burton realize that perhaps his creative home at Disney was no longer aligned with his unique vision.

In a 2022 interview, he explained his background by saying, “I initially began my journey there. Over the course of my career, I’ve been both hired and let go on multiple occasions.” He went on to say that his experience at Disney was akin to being Dumbo, trapped in a huge circus, which is why he believes his time with Disney has come to an end, and he felt compelled to break free.

Over the past few years, the need for authenticity and control in his artistic endeavors has grown stronger for him. Previously, Burton had reacted negatively to a BuzzFeed article that portrayed Disney princesses in his unique style during an interview with The Independent. To put it mildly, Burton found the idea utterly repulsive. “I struggle to find the words,” he would say. “It was like experiencing something akin to having your soul stolen. What it does is it drains you of something essential. It takes away a part of your spirit or essence; that’s truly unsettling, especially when it involves you personally. It’s as if a machine were stripping you of your humanity, your very soul.”
