Tim Burton’s Most Underrated Film is Finally Getting Its Flowers on Streaming

Tim Burton is widely recognized as one of the most extraordinary and individualistic directors in cinema history, with a long list of groundbreaking movies that are now considered timeless classics. Even his first directorial effort, the 1985 movie “Pee-wee’s Big Adventure,” already featured elements that would later define his signature style. However, it was the 1988 film “Beetlejuice” that truly solidified his unique perspective, combining dark comedy, whimsical fantasy, and gothic horror elements into a distinctive cinematic blend. Burton then demonstrated his ability to handle big-budget productions while maintaining his distinct style with the 1989 film “Batman.” Since then, he has alternated between large-scale blockbusters and more personal projects, all showcasing an unparalleled imagination that no other filmmaker has been able to replicate.

As a cinephile reflecting on the cinematic journey of a renowned director, I must acknowledge that not every film of his has withstood the test of time. However, some of his masterpieces, such as “Edward Scissorhands,” “The Nightmare Before Christmas,” and “Ed Wood,” continue to captivate audiences today. Regrettably, films like “Mars Attacks!”, “Planet of the Apes (2001),” and “Dark Shadows” have largely faded from memory, deservedly so.

Yet, one of his films that initially received a tepid response from both fans and critics, but is worthy of renewed interest, is 2016’s “Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children.” Fortunately, this movie now has another opportunity to find an audience as it becomes accessible through streaming services.

A Whimsically Gothic Adventure

Stepping into the realm of cinema critique, allow me to share my thoughts on this captivating dark fantasy flick. As a viewer, I embarked on an enthralling journey accompanying Jake Portman, a young lad, following the demise of his grandfather. Guided by tales of extraordinary “peculiar” kids with supernatural gifts, he ventures to a tranquil Welsh isle to delve deeper into these enigmatic narratives. Upon arrival, I found myself drawn into an intriguing world where I crossed paths with the mesmerizing Miss Peregrine, who safeguards a band of “peculiar” children ensconced within a time loop in 1943, shielding them from the devastating effects of World War II air raids and sinister beings known as Hollows. The latter are under the malevolent command of the ominous Mr. Barron, who covets these “peculiar” children for his nefarious intentions – to harness their powers for his wicked schemes.

The movie adaptation of Ransom Riggs’ creative novel, titled “Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children“, features a remarkable ensemble that enhances its appeal. Asa Butterfield delivers a compelling performance as Jake, whose timid and clumsy character resonates with viewers, guiding them into the more extraordinary aspects of this enchantingly eerie universe. Samuel L. Jackson is captivating as the flamboyant antagonist Mr. Barron, masterfully combining intimidation and madness. Yet, it’s Eva Green’s portrayal of Miss Peregrine that truly steals the show; her quirky demeanor is harmoniously contrasted with her maternal warmth.

One key reason why Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children stands out is its remarkable world-creation. Tim Burton’s artistic talent shines brightly in this film, showcasing his knack for intricate details, beautiful cinematography, and spectacular set designs. The movie offers a captivating viewing experience with every frame. Although the storyline is complex, encompassing various emotional elements and numerous characters, Burton skillfully manages the shifts in tone and character developments. Even though Danny Elfman, Burton’s regular collaborator, was absent in providing the score, Mike Higham and Matthew Margeson deliver commendable work that effectively conveys the story’s wonder, enigma, and poignancy—aspects as deep and compelling as what unfolds on screen.

Rediscovering Tim Burton’s Overlooked Fantasy Masterpiece

Despite facing criticism for straying from the original story, Burton’s “Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children” can still be appreciated as a unique film if one overlooks these discrepancies. For those who do, they’ll find it brims with the distinctive hallmarks that are characteristic of Tim Burton’s other well-known movies. The movie’s coming-of-age narrative has resonated strongly with younger viewers, while its unusual characters have been a hit in cosplay and fan art circles, setting it on course to become a cult favorite.

Despite not matching the critical and financial acclaim of some of Burton’s other films, “Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children” is still worth exploring due to its creativity and emotional depth. If you happened to miss it when it first came out, now’s an ideal opportunity to catch this underrated masterpiece.

As of this writing, Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children is streaming on MAX.
