As a seasoned film critic with decades of experience under my belt, I’ve seen it all – from blockbusters to indies, from action-packed epics to thought-provoking dramas. Yet, there are certain films that etch themselves deeply into one’s memory and heart. For many cinephiles, The Shawshank Redemption is undoubtedly one such film. And for good reason too!
In Apple TV+’s “Silo,” Tim Robbins takes on the character Bernard, a stern IT head and somewhat villainous figure. However, for many viewers, he is most remembered for his role as Andy Dufresne in “The Shawshank Redemption.” This movie, often regarded as one of the greatest or at least most cherished films ever made, has left an enduring impact. It’s no wonder then that Robbins frequently fields questions about the film and his character. What might surprise some is Robbins’s reaction to these discussions. In an interview with ComicBook, Robbins expressed that he never grows tired of hearing about “The Shawshank Redemption” or the love fans still hold for it.
“No, I don’t,” he said when asked if he gets tired of being asked. “That’s a good thing to hear.”
But while he doesn’t get tired of being asked about The Shawshank Redemption, Robbins did say that he enjoys that his Silo character, Bernard, is strikingly different than Andy Dufresne — and even feels lucky to play such a different character.
Robbins expressed that one of the perks of acting is the variety it offers. He doesn’t want to repeat the same role multiple times, so he feels fortunate.
In just a few days, we’ll be starting Season 2 of Silo, continuing the story from where Season 1 ended, with engineer Juliette Nichols (Rebecca Ferguson) having left her silo and possibly instigating a rebellion. But this season will also bring some high-stakes consequences as what Juliette discovers outside of the silo could show the price of rebellion and uncover hidden secrets too.
Previously, Graham Yost mentioned that there seems to be a growing desire for uprising since Juliette crossed the hill. However, he warned that based on what transpired in the other silo when rebellion failed and resulted in everyone’s death, this could be the central conflict of the season. In simpler terms, it appears there might be an attempt at rebellion due to Juliette’s actions, but we know from past events in another silo that uprisings can go terribly wrong and lead to tragic consequences.
Yost went on to say, “One of Juliette is in another silo, and the other one is back at her home silo. Juliette is aware of the potential danger to her own silo and is wondering if there’s any way she could return to assist them in preventing it. Things are becoming increasingly terrifying.
The story, titled “Silo,” follows the lives of the last 10,000 survivors on Earth who live within a massive, self-sustaining structure that shields them from a lethal, contaminated world outside. Yet, the reason for its construction and its true origins remain mysteries with severe repercussions for those who seek answers. The series is adapted from Hugh Howey’s “Silo” trilogy of novels – “Wool,” “Shift,” and “Dust.” In this captivating drama, you’ll find an ensemble cast featuring Rebecca Ferguson, Common, Tim Robbins, Iain Glen, Will Patton, Steve Zahn, Harriet Walter, Chinaza Uche, Avi Nash, Alexandra Riley, Remmie Milner, Clare Perkins, Billy Postlethwaite, Rick Gomez, Caitlin Zoz, and Tanya Moodie.
In the second season of “Silo,” set to premiere on Apple TV+, the opening episode airs on November 15, 2024. From that date, fresh installments will be released each Wednesday until January 17, 2025.
