It’s been a long time since Tina Fey could see Russia from her house.
Because she had served as head writer and Weekend Update co-anchor, among numerous other memorable roles, during her time on Saturday Night Live, it was no wonder that the comedian was so enthusiastic to return to 30 Rockefeller Center for the SNL 50: The Anniversary Special.
She shared with NBC’s Willie Geist and SNL alum Leslie Jones during the red carpet event that she found this week in this building particularly exhilarating. The reason being, it seems like a family reunion where everyone is returning home. It feels like catching up with siblings and cousins. Plus, it’s amazing to see professionals at work, perfecting their craft. It’s absolutely thrilling!
Tina, who created quite an impact reprising her role as Sarah Palin during the late 2000s, disclosed that she had access to the entire script of the special since she was a writer for the episode. However, she refused to reveal any details about the upcoming surprises and guest stars. (To catch all the celebrities on the red carpet, click here.)
I couldn’t help but look back on my inaugural day, a day that still sends shivers down my spine. That was the day I had an encounter with the legendary creator of Saturday Night Live, none other than Lorne Michaels himself!
On the first day, when I stepped into the building, I recall approaching the security personnel and informing them that I was there to meet Lorne Michaels. My immediate response was a sense of disbelief, as if I had left my body momentarily. The main memory I have from this encounter is this feeling of astonishment.
She added, “Then, you enter the office, facing someone, and the nameplate reads ‘Lorne Michaels.’ And in that moment, you find yourself exclaiming, ‘Wow!’
However, it was no surprise that the encounter transpired for the 30 Rock star, given her long-standing connection with Saturday Night Live. Since she was too young to watch the premiere in 1975, her older brother would reenact the most memorable scenes from each episode after they had aired.
She recalled that since she was born in 1970, making her around five at the time, her brother was older and always took care of tasks in the kitchen for her.
She additionally disclosed that among all the actors and actresses who played the part of a Saturday Night Live cast member throughout the years, there is one particular individual she found most favorable.
Tina shared that her most loved cast member, undeniably, was the late Jan Hooks. She was always among her favorites, and whatever Jan Hooks performed, it never failed to impress.
