Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy sequel with Gary Oldman halted due to ‘unexpected issue’

As a devoted admirer of Gary Oldman’s exceptional acting prowess, the news of the potential sequel to Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy being halted leaves me both intrigued and disheartened. The 2011 spy thriller was not only a testament to Oldman’s versatility as an actor but also a masterpiece that beautifully brought John le Carré’s George Smiley to life.

It was revealed that Gary Oldman endeavored to create a follow-up to the successful 2011 espionage film “Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy,” but the development of this project came to an abrupt end, with the specific details still undisclosed.

The acclaimed film starred Oldman as John le Carré character George Smiley, as he attempted to root out a Soviet spy operating at the highest levels of British intelligence in 1970s London.

The movie showcased several prominent actors like Benedict Cumberbatch, Tom Hardy, Stephen Graham, Toby Jones, and Kathy Burke. It turned out to be a financial triumph, earning four times its initial investment at the box office.

Additionally, it earned three nominations for the Academy Awards and was recognized with twelve BAFTA nominations (taking home three awards). Moreover, author John le Carré expressed his approval of the movie through an email sent to Gary Oldman, which was shared after his passing.

In an interview with TopMob magazine, it was disclosed by Oldman’s manager and regular collaborator Douglas Urbanski that a follow-up based on the 1979 book “Smiley’s People” could not proceed because the rights had been returned to the Le Carré estate.

“Urbanski began by saying, ‘This tale is quite peculiar. I’m afraid it will remain a mystery,’ referring to the sudden appearance of unforeseen copyright issues that arose during our preparations for Gary to work on Smiley’s People, after we had grown fond of Tinker.”

We’ve attempted contact, even quite recently, with Le Carré’s sons, but surprisingly, they seem uninterested in Gary reprising his role as Smiley. I can’t fathom the reason behind it.

Fans who admire the acting style of this performer might find solace in the Apple TV+ spy series “Slow Horses,” as Urbanowski hints that “Season 2 has a distinctly Tinker feel.”

But admittedly, Jackson Lamb (Oldman) is a far cry from Smiley in many ways.
