Marvel Studios’ “Spider-Man: Across Town” maintains its knack for subtly intertwining its alternate universe with the broader Marvel Universe via clever winks to longtime comic enthusiasts. In recent episodes, we discovered that while Peter Parker (portrayed by Hudson Thames) never received a call from Tony Stark, the storyline of “Civil War” still unfolds in a similar manner within this timeline. This involves the approval of the Sokovia Accords, compelling superheroes to register with the government. Given this significant shift, young Peter finds himself in a challenging predicament, as registration would necessitate revealing his secret identity and age to the authorities – a move that could potentially endanger not only him but also his Aunt May (voiced by Kari Wahlgren).
WARNING: Spoilers below for Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man Episode 5
In Episode 5 of “Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man”, the tricky predicament is handled superbly at a charity event for Lagos survivors. Here, Norman Osborn (portrayed by Colman Domingo) confronts General Ross (Travis Willingham), suggesting that the Spider-Man funded by Oscorp should be registered under the Accords. To protect his apprentice, Norman offers papers labeling the web-slinger as “John Gallo”, a name used previously by one of Oscorp’s security guards (Roger Craig Smith). Although it may appear to be just a way to preserve Peter’s secrecy, the choice of this name holds great importance for fans of comic books. It directly ties into a well-loved storyline featuring Peter Parker.
Who Is John Gallo in Marvel Comics, and What’s His Relation to Spider-Man?
The link between Spider-Man and the Gallo name is traced back to Marvel Comics’ “Identity Crisis” saga, where Peter Parker assumed several heroic personas to carry on fighting crime and clear his name of unjust murder accusations. One of these aliases was Ricochet, a costume created by his wife for him to pretend to be a hired gun while continuing his heroic duties. To keep Ricochet separate from Spider-Man, Peter deliberately moved more leisurely than typical and disregarded his spider-sense, instead depending on his natural agility and discs affixed to his coat sleeves for special throws.
Following Peter’s exoneration and renunciation of his multiple personas, the character of Ricochet was reborn in the form of college student Jonathan “Johnny” Gallo, debuting in the comic Slingers #0. Johnny possessed mutant abilities, including extraordinary agility and a heightened sense of danger reminiscent of Spider-Man’s spider-sense, which he kept secret from both his grieving father and girlfriend. When the enigmatic Black Marvel extends to Johnny the Ricochet costume and an invitation to join his team, the Slingers, Johnny seizes this chance to aid others while maintaining his mutant side a secret from the general public.
In many aspects, Johnny’s experiences mirrored those of Peter Parker during his initial years as a hero, notably in their shared struggles to reconcile their heroic duties with safeguarding their loved ones. This similarity was further emphasized during the “Civil War” comic series, when Johnny was proposed for enrollment into the Initiative project – an official government superhero training program initiated post-Superhuman Registration Act. However, at this point, Johnny had already aligned himself with the Loners, a collective that advocated against youngsters pursuing a life as superheroes.
In the animated series, the character “Spider-Man” uses the alias “John Gallo,” a choice that reflects the intricate history of secret identities and registration issues. By choosing this name, Norman safeguards Peter’s identity while honoring a character who, like Peter, navigated the fine line between heroic duty and personal security. Additionally, since both Peter and John have held the Ricochet title in Marvel Comics, it seems appropriate that they are linked to the Spider-Man persona in this animated adaptation.
