Toby Jones: “It’s hard to be satisfied with impact until change happens”

As someone who has been closely following this heart-wrenching saga, I must say that Mr Bates vs The Post Office has undeniably left a profound impact on me and countless others. The series sheds light on an unjust system that wrongfully accused innocent people of fraud, and the fight for justice continues even after its conclusion.

At the start of the year, when the case of Mr Bates vs The Post Office aired, the response it garnered was unprecedented.

In 2024, the TV show gained immense popularity almost instantly and ignited a widespread discussion about the hardships experienced by submostpasters and their mistresses who were falsely accused of fraud and theft due to IT system glitches. After its conclusion, former Prime Minister Rishi Sunak declared that the government would rectify these unjust convictions and propose new legislation to prevent similar occurrences.

In an exclusive interview with RT, Toby Jones, who played Alan Bates in the ITV series, stated that he finds it challenging to feel completely content until actual changes occur.

Toby Jones: “It’s hard to be satisfied with impact until change happens”

He continued: “Alan keeps everyone on the straight and narrow about that. About the fact that nothing has changed for a lot of people and it needs to happen and we’re yet to hear from the government… You heard the boos, they’re waiting for action. The audience are right behind it, they just want to see action. Like all of us.”

At the National Television Awards last night, Jo Hamilton – the subject of the show “Mr Bates vs The Post Office” – made an appeal as they received the Impact Award, acknowledging the series’ impact on reality.

In her speech, Hamilton told the audience “nothing has changed”.

I’m standing among a crowd of 555 individuals, and unfortunately, over three hundred of us are still waiting for our payments. Among them is esteemed figure Sir Alan Bates. He has a proposed solution, so when he returns to our country in need of assistance, let’s rally together to lend our support.

In reply, a representative from the Department of Business and Trade stated: “We acknowledge the immense hardship postmasters have experienced and understand that they’ve been waiting far too long for justice. They deserve appropriate compensation.

So, we’re exerting constant effort throughout the government to provide them with immediate, just, and prompt resolution, aimed at offering them relief.
