Todd Howard’s Regret for Skyrim Won’t Haunt The Elder Scrolls 6: Hammerfell

I’ve been reminiscing about my cherished memories of Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim, a game that’s been more than a decade since its release. Yet, it continues to stand tall as one of the franchise’s finest pieces. Bethesda truly outdid themselves with this masterpiece, providing an incredibly vast and immersive open-world landscape for me to explore. The questlines, narratives, and gameplay mechanics are nothing short of delightful.

Despite the fact that Skyrim was a remarkable achievement, its game director, Todd Howard, feels there were areas of unexplored potential. He’s frequently spoken about his regrets related to the RPG, mainly because he wishes they had continued to develop it for a longer period. Fortunately, Howard has promised fans that The Elder Scrolls 6 will avoid making this same mistake.

Skyrim‘s greatest mistake won’t make a return in Elder Scrolls 6

In the year 2024, MrMattyPlays got a chance to converse with Howard on his fondness for video games. During this conversation, the head of Bethesda addressed several inquiries about their upcoming ventures, possible re-creations, and numerous other topics.

During conversation, Howard shared that Bethesda intends to enhance the gameplay of Fallout 76. Despite a rocky start when it first launched, Bethesda has significantly improved the game’s experience. Howard’s enthusiasm for the game stems largely from his lingering regrets about Skyrim and Fallout 4.

Looking back, Skyrim and Fallout 4 are games we’ve continued to update somewhat, and they’re still thriving due to the countless creations and mods available. These titles remain extremely popular. Regrettably, we didn’t get to support them for as long as we would have liked with Fallout 4 in particular.

Despite Howard’s opinion that Bethesda didn’t back Skyrim, the game still received a significant amount of additional content post-launch. This included expansions like Dawnguard, Hearthfire, and Dragonborne, as well as various anniversary editions.

In all likelihood, Bethesda might not have foreseen just how enduringly popular The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim would remain, even a full decade following its initial release.

Howard affirmed that the eagerly awaited Elder Scrolls 6 will be developed with a strategic, long-range vision. Instead of a game overflowing with content, he aims for an immersive experience that players can revisit years later without hesitation.

The wait for Elder Scrolls 6 continues

Bethesda gave us a glimpse into The Elder Scrolls 6 as far back as 2018 with a brief 36-second teaser trailer. Since then, we’ve been left in the dark regarding the game. Despite assurances that it’s being developed, there’s been no release of images, gameplay clips, or vital details about its storyline or characters yet.

Based on recent leaks by YouTuber Extas1s, we’ve gained some insights into what the upcoming RPG might entail. It appears that the game could include vast urban landscapes, dragons, adaptable leveling systems, and a progression system based on activities.

The game may also incorporate features like ship construction and sea battles. Additionally, there’s speculation that the setting could be Hammerfell, an unexpected choice for some dedicated followers.

It’s intriguing that Extas1s suggests Bethesda could reveal a sneak peek of the game as early as July 2025. But this appears rather unlikely given our knowledge that the game started active development after October 2023. Given the time and resources required to create modern games, it seems more plausible that we’ll get a first look at this RPG in 2026, with a potential release date somewhere between 2027 and 2028.
