Toei Animation Fiscal Data Unpacks the War Between Dragon Ball, One Piece

As a veteran gamer with decades of anime-watching under my belt, I’ve witnessed the rise and fall of many beloved franchises. However, none have captivated me quite like the epic saga of Goku and Luffy! The latest fiscal report from Toei Animation has sent the gaming community into a frenzy, as these two titans are locked in a fierce battle for supremacy.

The success of the anime industry is soaring globally, resulting in increased scrutiny from executives regarding financial performance. Every studio involved in animation is eager to capitalize on the surge, examining factors such as budgets and profits. This fiscal year, Toei Animation is experiencing a significant influx of revenue, and their latest quarterly report delves into the ongoing battle between “Dragon Ball” and “One Piece.”

The details about top-performing intellectual properties at Toei Animation for the 2025 fiscal year were disclosed when they shared their Q1 data. Notably, the breakdown reveals that Dragon Ball is leading the pack with an astounding 5.67 billion yen, following a decrease in the previous fiscal year. Close behind is One Piece (the Straw Hat crew) with 5.54 billion yen.

As a die-hard anime fan who has been following both Dragon Ball and One Piece since their early days, I can confidently say that it feels like we’re witnessing a close race between the two giants of the shonen genre. Dragon Ball is currently in first place, but One Piece is breathing down its neck, ready to take over at any moment. Son Goku better keep his eyes open and be on high alert because Luffy and the Straw Hat Pirates are coming for that number one spot!

In the recent financial report, Dragon Ball led domestic licensing for the quarter, with One Piece coming in second. However, One Piece outshone Dragon Ball in the overseas film market, raking in nearly three times as much revenue. The earnings were more balanced in general overseas licensing, where Dragon Ball took the lead with 2.98 billion yen, closely followed by One Piece. Toei Animation’s other popular franchises such as Sailor Moon, Digimon, Pretty Cure, and Gegege no Kitaro also made appearances in this financial summary.

It’s apparent that currently, “Dragon Ball” and “One Piece” are engaged in a fierce competition at Toei Animation. The question now is which intellectual property (IP) will reign supreme during the 2025 fiscal year. “One Piece” has been performing exceptionally well with its weekly anime, and let’s not forget the significant buzz generated by Netflix’s live-action adaptation. On the other hand, “Dragon Ball” also has some exciting developments at Toei Animation. A new canon anime titled “Dragon Ball Daima” is scheduled for release this fall. Therefore, as the year progresses, both Goku and Luffy will have their hands full in maintaining their positions.
