The veteran quarterback, who played for the New England Patriots for 20 seasons before joining the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2020, has revealed that his connection with ex-coach Bill Belichick was a significant factor behind his move away from the Patriots.

In a newsletter published on March 24th, Tom expressed that after two decades, a natural strain had arisen between Coach Belichick and himself regarding our professional paths. This was because the New England Patriots were evolving as an organization in ways that didn’t align with where we were headed individually. He implied that this tension could only be addressed through a separation or by reevaluating our commitments.

Because he sensed a misalignment, the seven-time Super Bowl winner, who has children Benjamin (age 14) and Vivian (age 11) with ex-wife Gisele Bündchen, as well as son Jack (age 17) with ex Bridget Moynahan, detailed that he needed to carefully evaluate and reevaluate his commitments before making the switch.

He commented, “As I approached my forties with children still in school and carrying the marks of two decades of struggles, I pondered: what holds significance for me at this point in time?

Constantly acting as an astute athlete, Tom always made a pointed list of factors that mattered most to him in his professional endeavors. These included the abilities of his colleagues, monetary remuneration, and indeed, the leadership of the team’s coach.

Regarding his 2020 choice, he mentioned, “Ultimately, I selected Tampa over New England due to its overall superiority in around twenty factors. To put it simply, it scored higher on most aspects.

After Tom’s retirement from Tampa Bay and football in 2023, Belichick also departed from the NFL. Although Belichick, who is now 72 years old, hasn’t completely stepped away from the sport (as he currently coaches the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill team), Tom recently praised his former coach following his exit from the Patriots in January 2024.

Tom expressed his heartfelt appreciation on Instagram, saying he’d played for the greatest NFL coach ever, Coach Belichick. He believes he wouldn’t have become the player he was without Coach Belichick. He remains eternally thankful.
