Tom Cruise doesn’t shy away from expressing his opinions regarding his movie ventures, including merchandising materials outside the films. As disclosed in the recent edition of Empire Magazine, Cruise was firm about the souvenir popcorn bucket for “Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One.” Initially, the bucket was intended to resemble the Sevastopol submarine from the movie, but this concept was rejected by Cruise and his production team. Instead, a less flamboyant design emerged, showcasing the eye of the film’s antagonistic AI, The Entity. However, this decision sparked an idea for the sequel, “The Final Reckoning,” leading to Cruise participating in the creation of the collectible popcorn bucket for the latest installment.
According to the article, plans to include the submarine from the movie (The Sevastopol) were initially considered, but Tom Cruise and the film’s producers declined, forcing a rethink. The design details for the upcoming popcorn bucket are being kept secret until the movie’s release on May 23, 2025. Rob Bennett, AMC’s Director of Food and Beverage Product Strategy, expressed satisfaction with the final product design.
He told TIME Magazine in February, ‘We’ve really hit the mark.’ He appreciates that the filmmakers are so dedicated to their work.
Over the last several years, movie theater trips have been enhanced by the popularity of unique popcorn containers, some of which have gained significant attention on social media. Who doesn’t remember the Sandworm popcorn container that was unveiled alongside Dune: Part 2? It sparked a lot of online discussion and even inspired a humorous sketch on Saturday Night Live, poking fun at alternative uses for the container.
Additionally, we’ve noticed unique popcorn containers featuring characters like Deadpool and Wolverine (even with Ryan Reynolds’ input), Beetlejuice from Tim Burton, among others. TIME magazine pinpoints the release of The Rise of Skywalker in 2019 as the starting point for these popcorn buckets, although they mention that it wasn’t until the Barbie-themed launch that movie theaters truly experienced competition when it comes to these special popcorn containers.
Bennett clarified, ‘Completely truthful, it was actually a Barbie,’ he said. We didn’t have the convertible car, someone else did. But we did possess an item resembling a popcorn container, reminiscent of the box Barbie comes in with the transparent front. This discovery really broadened our perspective on the possibilities these items hold.
In the world of theaters, unique merchandise serves as a draw for audiences, encouraging them to purchase tickets and occupy seats. These items, such as collectible buckets, range in price from about $24 to $60. The limited availability of these items fuels demand, thereby helping theaters boost their earnings during the initial week of a movie’s release.
After the first week, sales tend to decrease for us, so we aim to reach an ideal figure instead. Our objective is to run out of stock by late afternoon on Sundays.
The popularity of these buckets appears unwavering. The mystery surrounding the popcorn bucket from Mission: Impossible only strengthens this popularity, and it seems this trend will continue for some time. While the buckets might not be enticing you personally to go to the theater, they are certainly appealing to a large number of other enthusiasts. As summer movie season approaches, we may see more exciting additions to that list.
The movie “Mission: Impossible – The Last Chapter” is set to hit theaters on May 23, 2025, and it’s possible that Tom Cruise might be appearing in his last film of this series. It’s unclear if he plans to leave the film industry entirely, but there are hints that he may scale back his involvement in future installments. Hayley Atwell, Simon Pegg, and Vanessa Kirby will reprise their roles from more recent movies, while Ving Rhames is set to make his eighth appearance as Luther Stickel within the franchise.
