Tom Cruise’s run as Ethan Hunt in the Mission: Impossible series might be wrapping up with the eighth and last film titled The Final Reckoning, but now that he has a clear schedule, there’s an exciting franchise he could potentially join. Known for his iconic roles in films like Top Gun, A Few Good Men, Edge of Tomorrow, Magnolia, and many others, Cruise is one of the most renowned actors throughout history. Despite this, Ethan Hunt has been his longest-running character, but The Final Reckoning truly marks the end of his time as the talented super-spy.
Although Tom Cruise won’t continue with the high-grossing film series (it has earned $4.63 billion so far); his recent remarks about an entirely distinct venture might hint at his transition to another billion-dollar franchise.
In a chat with the director of Godzilla Minus One, Takashi Yamazaki (on YouTube), Tom Cruise expressed his admiration by saying “You revolutionized the genre. It was remarkable, flawless,” while Christopher McQuarrie, director of Mission: Impossible – Fallout, praised it as “very elegant, very human.” Given Tom Cruise’s fondness for Godzilla Minus One, there’s one franchise where he would undoubtedly fit perfectly.
In post-war Japan, the 2023 film “Godzilla Minus One” centers around Kōichi Shikishima (Ryunosuke Kamiki), a former kamikaze pilot who struggles with post-traumatic stress disorder after encountering the colossal creature named “Godzilla.” Two years later, he finds himself fighting Godzilla once more. This film garnered critical praise and was the highest-grossing Godzilla movie in Japan, even earning an Academy Award for Best Visual Effects on a meager budget. The Godzilla franchise has amassed over $2.5 billion globally, making it an ideal role for Tom Cruise.

At present, two significant films based on the character “Godzilla” are in production. The upcoming movie titled “Godzilla x Kong: Supernova” is a follow-up to “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire“, set within the Monsterverse franchise and slated for release in 2027. Additionally, director Yamazaki is working on a sequel to “Godzilla Minus One“. Considering Tom Cruise’s popularity as an action star and his affinity for both Yamazaki and the “Minus One” series, it would be exciting to witness him make his debut in a “Godzilla” film. Given the potential for this high-budget sequel to further push the boundaries of the genre, it seems fitting that Cruise could play a part in it.
As the American Monsterverse franchise continues to grow increasingly fantastical, the sequel of Godzilla Minus One might gain a greater sense of authenticity and depth by featuring Tom Cruise. With Cruise on board under the skillful direction of Yamazaki, the sequel could potentially surpass all other Japanese Godzilla films in box office success, possibly refocusing attention towards Godzilla’s roots instead of overemphasizing the American versions. It would be thrilling to see Cruise appear in future installments of Supernova as well, adding weight and human emotion to the monster movie genre.
