Netflix has revealed plans for a sequel to a beloved Tom Hanks series, however, it appears that the main actor will not be part of this new installment. Back in 2006, Tom Hanks first donned the role of iconic literary character Professor Robert Langdon on the big screen, in the film adaptation of Dan Brown’s novel, The Da Vinci Code. Over the next few years, he reprised this role twice more, in Angels & Demons and Inferno, allowing the Academy Award-winning actor to delve deeper into Dan Brown’s mystery tales reminiscent of Indiana Jones.
It was recently revealed that Dan Brown’s Professor Robert Langdon universe will undergo another film adaptation, this time with Tom Hanks not involved. Although previous adaptations of the series have been made without Hanks in the lead role, this news still comes as a surprise.
According to its Tudum blog, Netflix has announced plans to transform Brown’s forthcoming novel, “The Secret of Secrets,” into an exclusive mini-series on their streaming platform. This marks a unique opportunity to introduce the author’s renowned mystery series to the platform in a new and captivating way.
The upcoming TV series will be overseen by Carlton Cuse, the creator of “Bates Motel,” who has collaborated with the streaming platform on their successful “Locke & Key” program in the past.
Brown is set to contribute in both writing and overseeing production for an upcoming project, marking the fifth time one of his works has been adapted. Interestingly, this will be the initial announcement prior to the publication of the book that serves as its foundation.
Previously, Hanks had starred in three adaptations of Robert Langdon’s Brown novels: “The Da Vinci Code” released in 2006, “Angels & Demons” from 2009, and “Inferno” which came out in 2016.
In “The Secret of Secrets,” a different actor will step into the shoes of the beloved literary character previously played by Hanks. This isn’t uncharted waters for him, as he saw Ashley Zukerman assume the role of Robert Langdon in Peacock’s “The Lost Symbol” series last year.
Dan Brown’s new book, titled “The Secret of Secrets“, is set for release this September and will be the sixth installment in the Robert Langdon series. It is anticipated that events from this novel will serve as inspiration for an upcoming Netflix series, which follows the journey of Harvard symbology professor Robert Langdon, who must safeguard a scientist whose pioneering research on the human mind has attracted unwanted attention from enigmatic ancient forces.
Why Isn’t Tom Hanks in the New Dan Brown Series?
It’s important to mention that as of now, no details about the actors playing Robert Langdon in the series “The Secret of Secrets” have been shared publicly. It seems unlikely that Tom Hanks will return to his role from “The Da Vinci Code.
Following the TV adaptation of “The Lost Symbol” shifting focus from Hank’s portrayal of the character, it appeared unlikely (at least on television) that he would reprise his role.
If there’s a chance the franchise revives for a significant cinematic project, maybe by adapting Dan Brown’s unadapted book, “Origin”, Tom Hanks might consider reprising his role as Robert Langdon. However, at this point, it seems unlikely that such an event will occur.
And that may be okay, as Hanks has a busy schedule in the next couple of years anyway.
68-year-old actor Tom Hanks will be featured in “Tony Story 5,” a film currently being developed by Disney. For those eager for a similar sensation to “The Da Vinci Code,” Hanks is also slated to revisit the world of treasure hunting this summer, appearing in Wes Anderson’s upcoming movie titled “The Phoenician Scheme.
Furthermore, not only is this renowned actor a master at acting, but he also has an impressive lineup of producing projects in store for viewers. These include the 2025 documentary titled “Billy Joel: And So It Goes” and the upcoming biopic about Carole King, titled “Beautiful“.
