Andy Serkis, the director, delves into the methodology behind the live-action transformation of Venom and extols Tom Hardy for his impact on Sony’s Venom films. Despite a drop in global box office earnings for Sony’s Venom movies, the Venom trilogy has emerged as the most prosperous Marvel venture within Sony’s Spider-Man universe. Comic book fame significantly contributed to the films’ success, but it was their action sequences, visual effects, and Tom Hardy’s acting that truly resonated with viewers.
At Fan Expo Philadelphia 2025, I, a devoted cinema enthusiast, had the privilege of hearing director Andy Serkis shed light on the making of “Venom: Let There Be Carnage.” He revealed an intriguing detail about the process – Tom Hardy initially recorded Venom’s lines before determining where in the scene the symbiote would be placed. Once the lines were recorded, Serkis would meticulously plan the framing with Hardy, always keeping Venom’s position in mind when filming each scene. For a deeper insight into his thoughts, I encourage you to read Andy Serkis’ full comments below.
Andy Serkis stated: “Tom Hardy is incredibly imaginative, and his method for bringing Venom to life was recording Venom’s lines first, then being able to position him in the scene wherever he desired since symbiotically he can appear anywhere and move freely. My role was to collaborate with him on deciding where I could direct him for shots, and where Venom needed to be theoretically. However, Hardy had a great deal of freedom to express that other aspect of himself.
