As a passionate movie-goer, I’m thrilled about a fantastic series from Image Comics making its way onto the silver screen! In 2022, the creative duo of Tom King and Elsa Charretier introduced us to “Love Everlasting,” a series that beautifully blends elements from “Quantum Leap” and “Groundhog Day.” This captivating tale follows the life of Joan Peterson, a woman who finds herself in an endless loop of love.
Tom King is no stranger to accolades, having won multiple Eisner, Ringo, and Harvey awards for his exceptional work on “Batman,” “Mister Miracle,” and “The Vision.” His latest comics masterpiece, “Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow,” serves as the blueprint for DC’s upcoming movie featuring Milly Alcock. Now, I can’t wait to see how King’s next comic creation, “Love Everlasting,” unfolds on the big screen!
As I eagerly anticipate the silver screen, I can’t help but share my excitement about Sony Pictures Entertainment’s upcoming adaptation of “Love Everlasting.” Lenny Abrahamson, the mastermind behind the heart-wrenchingly beautiful “Room,” will be at the helm, and Jane Goldman, whose scriptwriting skills have graced us with numerous gems, is set to bring this story to life. The production is under the watchful eyes of Emma Watts and Ed Guiney from Element Pictures.
“Love Everlasting” follows the captivating journey of Joan Peterson, a woman who finds herself ensnared in an endless, harrowing loop of romantic entanglements – each time she falls in love, she’s whisked away from her world and plunged into another heartrending tale. However, as the cycles of broken love continue to repeat, Joan begins to question this pattern of emotional turmoil, ultimately deciding that self-discovery and personal growth are more important than the love of any man.
In essence, I can hardly wait for the day when I can immerse myself in this poignant tale of self-realization and resilience, as Joan navigates her way through a world that seems intent on defining her by her romantic relationships.
Abrahamson’s resume boasts of his involvement in the movie “Room,” featuring Brie Larson, who clinched the Best Actress Oscar for her portrayal of a woman who was imprisoned for seven years with her five-year-old son, played by Jacob Tremblay. Additionally, he served as director and executive producer on Hulu’s series “Normal People,” starring Paul Mescal and Daisy Edgar-Jones.
Initially, the chilling romantic series “Love Everlasting” was only available on Substack, but later it transitioned to Image Comics. King and Charretier initially introduced “Love Everlasting” on their Substack, during a time when Substack entered agreements with numerous comic book creators to produce exclusive content for the digital medium.
Tom King expressed that “Everlasting Love” is his cherished upcoming project. It offers him the opportunity to craft another masterpiece similar to “Vision” or “Mister Miracle,” delving into the motifs of conformity and rebellion via a narrative about one woman’s odyssey through a captivating yet terrifying realm of Love. When the collaboration with Image was announced in 2022, he told ComicBook this. Having spent a decade in comics, this is his initial creator-owned project and the most ambitious endeavor he has undertaken so far. Together with Elsa, they aim to produce another timeless work like “The Sandman,” an expansive examination of the entire chronicle of storytelling, revealing how love stories from mythology linger, captivate us, shackle us, and potentially, on rare occasions, liberate us.
Elsa Charretier shared that in her career, she’s never been given such a chance to delve extensively into every facet of storytelling with this project, Love Everlasting. This work is challenging her to create diverse worlds, to draw from various historical periods and locations for designs suitable for comics, to develop expressions and compositions that both delight and scare readers. It’s clear we are all giving our best on this project.
Tom King shares writing duties on the HBO original series “Lanterns” with showrunner Chris Mundy (known for “Ozark” and “True Detective: Night Country”) and Damon Lindelof (“Watchmen,” “The Leftovers”). This series, adapted from DC’s “Green Lantern” comics, is overseen by Mundy, Lindelof, James Gunn, Peter Safran, King, Ron Schmidt, and Hawes in executive production roles.
